Cursor Adds iPad Support: Cloud Agent Management Expands Beyond iPhone

Cursor, the AI-powered coding platform acquired by SpaceX for $60 billion, has extended its iOS app to iPad, giving developers a larger-screen option for managing coding agents away from their desks. The iPad version was released yesterday, joining the existing iPhone app and following a TestFlight beta preview earlier in June. It lands in the middle of significant organisational change at the company.

What the app actually does

The iPad release is not a full IDE replacement. Cursor is placing it as a companion tool for developers who want to stay connected to active engineering work while away from their primary machine. The core feature set is built around agent management rather than on-device coding:

  • Launch coding agents from anywhere to implement features, investigate issues, or answer questions about a codebase
  • Track and manage active agents and review completed work
  • Review screenshots and videos of changes and annotate images to provide visual feedback
  • Inspect diffs and merge pull requests
  • Talk to agents using voice conversations
  • Understand unfamiliar codebases faster using agent-assisted exploration

The companion angle reflects where Cursor’s roadmap is heading. In a blog post following the SpaceX acquisition announcement, the company said “over time, the experience of running agents in the cloud will become indistinguishable from running them on your local machine,” with the goal of “remote control and fluid handoffs between local and cloud” environments. iPad support is the latest step in expressing that vision across Apple’s device lineup.

SpaceX inked the deal with Cursor in April 2026, a week after going public, and the acquisition closed earlier this month at a reported $60 billion. SpaceX had previously absorbed xAI, which includes the X platform, in February. The Cursor deal adds a developer-facing layer to that stack, placing SpaceX in direct competition with Claude Code and OpenAI’s Codex.

Cursor’s Composer model, released less than six months before the acquisition, underpins the agentic capabilities in the mobile app. Composer 1.5 scaled reinforcement learning by over 20x, and Composer 2 added continued pretraining to reach what the company describes as frontier-level performance at a fraction of the cost of competing models.
