A lot of people have been reporting issues with jailbreaking using the new blackra1n tool by George, especially iPod Touch 3G owners. Some of these issues have to do with the fact that this is a tethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 3G so far. This means that to boot your iPod Touch 3G, it must be plugged into your computer and you must run blackra1n again. For those stuck at a white screen or being unable to boot your device, here are a few important pointers to keep in mind during the process:
- Make sure you’ve updated to 3.1.2. This jailbreak is not for 3.0 or 3.1.
- Download the purplera1n tool to your desktop. Some users have reported issues of the application crashing or having issues with rights on Vista or 7. This should fix those issues. For more convenience. run it as an administrator.
- Make sure no other software is running when you jailbreak to avoid interference.
- If your device doesn’t boot for a long time, hold down the power and home buttons and restart it. If it tells you to connect to iTunes, something must have gone wrong and you might have to restart the process. I know this is annoying, but it has worked for some people after some tries. It does work.
- You won’t lose your data by jailbreaking. Only a fresh firmware restore could mean that your apps might go away, but they can be synced back using iTunes.
- If you have a white screen turn off the device by holding the power and home buttons for 10 seconds and boot it again.
- If iTunes keeps popping up, use CTRL + ALT + DELETE to go to the task manager and kill all iTunes processes which includes iTunesHelper.exe. This can cause interference with the process too.
- Strangely, doing the process on different computers has also worked for some people.
In the end, keep in mind that blackra1n really works. I tried it on my iPod Touch 2G 8GB, and it worked on the first try. It only got stuck when running Cydia for the first time. I had to reboot using the Power + Home buttons trick, but after that, it has been really smooth.

Update: George Hotz has tweeted about an important issue that most people are facing. You’ll have to check if your iPod Touch 2G or 3G, 8GB model starts with MB or MC. For MC it won’t work, so you should restore it back to the old firmware. It works fine for the ones that start with MB. I guess that should answer most of the issues people are facing with blackra1n.

Hey I have a question . My ipod is 3g (soon to be updated to 3.1.2 for now it`s 3.1.1) but the model starts with MC is it about all MC models or only about the 8gb that can`t be jailbreak ,because my one is 32 gb ? If so is thare another way to jailbreak it or are we f**ked ?

ok so i have previously jailbroken my itouch 2g using blackrain on 3.1.2 it worked prefectly. i got a iphone for chistmas and decided to delete everything from my itouch and clean it out, so i went to setting general reset and deleted all cotent and settings. when i did that it said it would take about 2 hours but its been 11 days and still hasnt finished rebooting. its stuck on the apple logo and ive tried to rejialbreak and restore the itouch but thoughout sometime in the process it always gets stuck on the apple logo. PLEASE PLEASE i need help. ived saved for the itouch for almost 8 months and i dont want it to go to waste. I APPRIECIATE ANY information youcan give me. PLEASE!!!!!!!
IPod touch 8GB (MC): didn’t see the limitation with MC models … but it worked fine ! Until i reboot several days later … then it stayed frozen on the iTunes icon. Nothing else to do but DFU mode.
Any way to Jailbreak those models ?

I jail broke my ipod and it was working fine then i turned it off and i knew i had to run blackra1n again to open, it is stuck in recoverymode and when i run black ra1n it says an error occured so blackra1n has to be closed i triedd it 10 times and it didnt work. I connected it to itunes it says an ipod has detected but can not be identified properly i tried taking off all usbs and plugging my ipod usb in it didnt work i turned it offf and turned it on it still dosent work could you help me pleasee i have an ipod touch 3rd generation
So I have a 32gb ipod 2nd gen, I jailbroke it but it refused to let me use wifi so I tried turning it off and now itunes won’t restore it and it is just stuck on the screen that says plug it in to itunes.
When I try to restore it says an unknown error occured
IF YOUR IPOD TOUCH RESTARTS AND IT COMES UP THAT CONNECT TO ITUNES LOGO, CONNECT YOUR IPOD TOUCH AND PRESS MAKE IT RAIN! AND THEN IT WILL RESTART AGAIN!!!!!!!!!!
Mine worked and all..I’m just not satisfied? Is that weird? Probably. This tethered crap is killing me. I hardly even know the difference, but..I thought jailbreak is when you get all free apps? This is nothing like that…it’s off-brand apps that are mostly free..

Ok, I got a question for any buddy with the brains. I have a iPod touch 2 gen with 3.1.2 firmware on it. So I downloaded the blackrai1n, and then did all the steps in the discription…/plug in iPod, run blackra1n, click make it rain. Then it jailbroke it in about 5 seconds, so I let it re-boot and do it’s thing and once it was done I ran it a second time, it went well just like the first time.. So it jailbroke fine and I installed cydia and all that ext. ext. Finally I turned my iPod off for the night, but I fergot to check my email, so I go to turn it back on and and it shows the connect to iTunes picture and won’t turn on. So I reastore my iPod and try to jailbreak it again but now it won’t jailbreak… Any advise? I could use some help, any buddy… Help me Obi won Konobi your my only hope. LOL
you doesn’t have to restore it when your iPhone need to reboot,just plug it to your PC and then run blackr1an > make it rain just once and it’ll reboot in a second !
Oh, and one more thing I fergot to mention. The second time I tryed to jailbreak it I used the compatibillity thing with the blackra1n.
Jailbreaking is kinda lame, and a waste of time. I thought it would be much cooler, but just created problems, and apps aren’t worthwhile anyway. LAME

I have a 3G Ipod Touch with a model MC that I jailbroke. It froze on me using Cydia. Went to a completely black screen. Restored in Itunes and apparently was fine BUT I now cannot access the music on my ipod through Itunes. It keeps saying cannot sync error -54. Any help? Is this a permissions or admin issue? I can use master commander or iphone browser to manually add music but the ipod does not read it. It does when added to downloads and can be played through dtunes but that is not what I am looking to do.

Hi, I have an ipod touch 2ndgen. i downloaded the balckra1n at blackra1n.com, and chose the Windows one, and I saved it. I ran the app and i get the connect to itunes screen and then a flash of white. Then the program says that I have finished jailbreaking. It goes to the screen with the silver apple in the middle, and the Auto play thing on my computer pops up. Then, when I check if the app is in my ipod, it is not there. i do not know how to check if it is a “MC” or not, and I don’t want to pay to upgrade to 3.1.2. Can someone please help me? I am very desperate to get this done in an hour because I must go soon. Thanks in advance to anyone who is willing to help a maden in distress?!? Your help will be greatly appreciated!!! God BLESS!
this doesn’t seem to work on the new white 3gs phones i have black one that has no problem but the white one keeps crashing. after it told to plug it back into itunes i had the blackra1n window still opened so it booted my phone back on i hope i dont have to do this every time i have to turn my phone off!
