A lot of people have been reporting issues with jailbreaking using the new blackra1n tool by George, especially iPod Touch 3G owners. Some of these issues have to do with the fact that this is a tethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 3G so far. This means that to boot your iPod Touch 3G, it must be plugged into your computer and you must run blackra1n again. For those stuck at a white screen or being unable to boot your device, here are a few important pointers to keep in mind during the process:
- Make sure you’ve updated to 3.1.2. This jailbreak is not for 3.0 or 3.1.
- Download the purplera1n tool to your desktop. Some users have reported issues of the application crashing or having issues with rights on Vista or 7. This should fix those issues. For more convenience. run it as an administrator.
- Make sure no other software is running when you jailbreak to avoid interference.
- If your device doesn’t boot for a long time, hold down the power and home buttons and restart it. If it tells you to connect to iTunes, something must have gone wrong and you might have to restart the process. I know this is annoying, but it has worked for some people after some tries. It does work.
- You won’t lose your data by jailbreaking. Only a fresh firmware restore could mean that your apps might go away, but they can be synced back using iTunes.
- If you have a white screen turn off the device by holding the power and home buttons for 10 seconds and boot it again.
- If iTunes keeps popping up, use CTRL + ALT + DELETE to go to the task manager and kill all iTunes processes which includes iTunesHelper.exe. This can cause interference with the process too.
- Strangely, doing the process on different computers has also worked for some people.
In the end, keep in mind that blackra1n really works. I tried it on my iPod Touch 2G 8GB, and it worked on the first try. It only got stuck when running Cydia for the first time. I had to reboot using the Power + Home buttons trick, but after that, it has been really smooth.

Update: George Hotz has tweeted about an important issue that most people are facing. You’ll have to check if your iPod Touch 2G or 3G, 8GB model starts with MB or MC. For MC it won’t work, so you should restore it back to the old firmware. It works fine for the ones that start with MB. I guess that should answer most of the issues people are facing with blackra1n.
Update 2: blackra1n RC2 has been released which fixes most issues. Read more here.
Important: iPhone OS 3.1.3 has been released for the iPhone and iPod Touch. We’ve got a new guide up on how to jailbreak iPhone 3.1.3 and iPod Touch 3.1.3 with redsn0w 0.9.4. Don’t upgrade to iPhone OS 3.1.3 if you’re using an unlocked iPhone 3G/3Gs or a jailbroken iPod Touch 2G (MC Model)/3G. The redsn0w guide is for iPhone 2G/3G jailbreak and iPod Touch 1G/2G ( non-MC Models) only.
Update: Use this one to jailbreak all iPod Touch models with OS 3.1.2/3.1.3 untethered using Spirit Jailbreak!
That is not enough, why it won't work on MC models?? I mean he cannot just say that from up his sleeve, what is the reason it won't work??? What's the difference between an MC model from an MB?
that's true every time you restart your jailbreak goes away its a huge load of crap
A1 isn't the model number they are talking about. Mine starts with A1 (on the back) as well, but the model people are talking about is the model number seen in Settings>General>About. Yours most likely is an MC. Restore using iTunes.
Does anyone know when it will work for MC models?
I made a batch program that helps people with an iPhone 3G on windows xp, vista or 7, just copy and past the following code into notepad and save it as helper.bat

100% SUCCESSFUL — FOLLOW THESE INSTRUCTIONS.
IF YOU HAVE PROBLEMS CHECK THIS IT WORKS FOR ME:
1- copy Blackra1n to c:. no conpability mode.-
2- kill itunes helper
3- turn off your Iphone /iPod
4- open Blackra1n as administrator (vista y windows 7) and click Make it rain.
5- push home button y and power same time until apple logo appear.- then release power button.
6- keep push home button until george face appear
I tried a million times before this
This process worked perfectly the first time….
George's face never shows up…when I keep the button pressed…i had it pressed for 30 secs.
also, the pc makes noises as if the usb has been removed.
This doesnt work dude…anyother tricks…
i m still reaching the 2 millionth time i have tried something…
the next step would be throwing my phone out of the window…
hey BENJI your way work for both MB and MC?
yes, Benji, I too would like to know if yours is an MC or MC.
When can we expect an explanation or update for the MC?
This is just a thought but could the bluetooth addition have anything to do with it?
Iphone 3g 8 gb mb Model tried everything does not work George make junk will wait for rock your phone 3.2.1
anyone know when the new redsnow will be out because blackra1n does not work on my iphone 3g 3.21 model mb 8 gb Does anyone know why ?
I have tried everything(fresh restore, ending processes, holding power and home…etc) posted in every thread and was very doubtful of blackra1n working for me. I got blackra1n to work for me by putting phone into DFU mode myself instead of letting blackra1n do it…hope this helps someone.
I’ve been trying this since Monday the 12th and couldn’t get it to jailbreak. And I found these instructions from “PuG” on another site AND IT WORKED.. FINALLY ! ! !
“Been messing about with my 3G 8gb for about half an hour trying to jailbreak it lol.. followed everyones suggestions and nothing worked… THEN i cracked it… Do all the update stuff first then unplug your iphone and reboot it. compatibility mode your blackra1n, RUN blackra1n and click “make it rain”… THEN and only then plug your iphone back into the computer… was over and done in 30 seconds, popped up wit the message telling me my iphone would be jailbroken once it had reboot and the image of the curly haired lad with the wave of iphones popped onto the screen… it rebooted and now its done. Cheers..” In addition I stopped all Antivirus services..
This is the only thing that worked! Great crack! You are a lifesaver.
I have a Touch model MB with 3.1.2. When I ran blackra1n the screen would go back and I never got the guy’s boot logo.
If you are getting the black screen instead of the boot logo with the picture of the guy, follow CTalor’s instructions.
1. Leave your Ipod Touch unplugged.
2. Run blackra1n and click on “make it rain”
3. THEN and ONLY Then, Plug your Ipod Touch in.
still no real answers here, I just want to know IF it will be available for the MC any time soon.
hopefully we'd be able to get a JB for the MC model soon. I'd been trying for many days and reinstalling the firmware over and over again till I found out that it doesn't work on MC. If anyone has any further information or links, let us know.
i have a mc and i have been doing this for about 4 days now
but i just found out that it wont work
so can i like jailbreak my ipod!?!?
The face appear on my iPod display, then iPod close, but then i cant open iPod and iTunes Run and tell me i have to recovery , what's wrong?
just give up until another jailbreak comes out. If you have an 8gig, 3rd gen with the model number starting with MC, then you are screwed.
