A lot of people have been reporting issues with jailbreaking using the new blackra1n tool by George, especially iPod Touch 3G owners. Some of these issues have to do with the fact that this is a tethered jailbreak for iPod Touch 3G so far. This means that to boot your iPod Touch 3G, it must be plugged into your computer and you must run blackra1n again. For those stuck at a white screen or being unable to boot your device, here are a few important pointers to keep in mind during the process:
- Make sure you’ve updated to 3.1.2. This jailbreak is not for 3.0 or 3.1.
- Download the purplera1n tool to your desktop. Some users have reported issues of the application crashing or having issues with rights on Vista or 7. This should fix those issues. For more convenience. run it as an administrator.
- Make sure no other software is running when you jailbreak to avoid interference.
- If your device doesn’t boot for a long time, hold down the power and home buttons and restart it. If it tells you to connect to iTunes, something must have gone wrong and you might have to restart the process. I know this is annoying, but it has worked for some people after some tries. It does work.
- You won’t lose your data by jailbreaking. Only a fresh firmware restore could mean that your apps might go away, but they can be synced back using iTunes.
- If you have a white screen turn off the device by holding the power and home buttons for 10 seconds and boot it again.
- If iTunes keeps popping up, use CTRL + ALT + DELETE to go to the task manager and kill all iTunes processes which includes iTunesHelper.exe. This can cause interference with the process too.
- Strangely, doing the process on different computers has also worked for some people.
In the end, keep in mind that blackra1n really works. I tried it on my iPod Touch 2G 8GB, and it worked on the first try. It only got stuck when running Cydia for the first time. I had to reboot using the Power + Home buttons trick, but after that, it has been really smooth.

Update: George Hotz has tweeted about an important issue that most people are facing. You’ll have to check if your iPod Touch 2G or 3G, 8GB model starts with MB or MC. For MC it won’t work, so you should restore it back to the old firmware. It works fine for the ones that start with MB. I guess that should answer most of the issues people are facing with blackra1n.

I have a 8GB 2nd gen Ipod touch, which is an MB so should work. But it doesn't.
purplera1n on Windows XP quickly terminates abnormally (Event BEX).
purplera1n on OSX sits “waiting” forever.
In either case I get the recovery graphic on the ipod, with itunes popping up wanting to reload it.
Any suggestions?
I would try pwnage 3.1.4, but the dev-team page says it only works on 2nd gen that have already been jailbroken.
i just got an itouch 32gb with 3.1.1 so i upgraded to 3.1.2 and then did the whole blackra1n jail break but now when i open my apps they dont work. they will open and then close quickly. can some one help
i was getting the jailbreak and turned my ipod off so it says i need to connect it to itunes

You can's shut down your ipod completely that's why it says it is tethered jailbreak and you can't shut it off!!!
I have an ipod touch 1G, were always using QuickPWN on Windows or PWnageTool on a mac and never had a problem, i even used RedSn0w after the QuickPWN project was down. Now i am trying Blackra1n, The iPod rebooted after the jailbreak, but when i installed Winterboard form Cydia ( and Mobile Substrate ), Cydia ask to reboot. Well my ipod doesn't boot anymore…I see the Apple logo and after a few seconds and then it turns off. Now mr. Geohotz think he found a “better and faster” way to jailbreak iPod/iPhone, but it's just PURE SHIT! So i suggest to use Redsn0w on Windows, or better PwnageTool on a mac, it's longer indeed plus you need a modified .ispw, but in the end…it WORKS!
Me again, i finally managed to enter DFU mode and, “If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.” is bullshit, blackra1n managed to “jailbreak” again…but couldn't restart properly. So for those who the ipod doesn't restart anymore, make sure the device is turned off, hold the Home button for 5 sec., then hold the power button while maintaining the Home button until you see the itunes logo with the connector DO NOT RELEASE THE POWER BUTTON AT ANY TIME! i don't know why but …it's not the same DFU mode…Now in itunes you can restore you ipod with an ORIGINAL .ipsw, downloaded or on your computer. Voila, now if you want a jailbroken device, i suggest you download a custom jailbroken .ipsw from the net and restore again from that file in itunes if you on a PC, and to use PwnageTool on a MAC.
I got it to work with a 2g ipod touch. Just use the batch file that David provided down there.
exactly same than me, only with apps from appstore. The cracked games or whatever else, works perfectly for me.
But all MC are affected, isn't it? I mean my touch 3G is 32Gb MC model, but same issues for me…

Finally I managed to get the JB working in my iPod touch 3G, model MC008PY.
I was using it normally, installing several apps from the Appstore. I then downloaded Blackra1n in Windows Vista. Before plugging the USB cable, I pressed Control+Alt+Supr in order to open the Task Manager. In the tab Processed, I ended the process iTunesHelper.exe. I then plugged the iPod with USB. Then right-clicked blackra1n and “run as Admin” (or something like that, as I use windows in spanish). Confirmed opening the file and clicked “make it ra1n”. The image of blackra1n appeared and rebooted in just 15-20 seconds. Clicked OK in the message blackra1n shows you confirming blackra1n is done and the app was there, in the iPod. Opened it, installed Cydia, then added the source http://apt.macosmovil.com and installed the app “AppSync para OS 3.1 (3.1….)” and then shutted down the iPod. Restarted it, but did again the blackra1n thing just to start it up, because it's tethered. And then at last I could install any cracked App and the ones from the appstore worked fine. AT LAST !!!
Please note that I never had to restore anything. iPod was already in version 3.1.2.
Hopefully this will help those who still have problems with this iPod Touch 3G model MCxxxx

I have an MB model and I also can not JB the dang thing. I have read all the blogs and tried it all, many times still nothing. I never get the photo just the itunes screen and then it hangs on the reboot. I even reloaded, then had to restore apps. That took awhile!! Guess I'll just wait til something else comes along. Anyways, thanks for all you guys do that have the time to spend on this. Good luck in finding what the prob is.

“Been messing about with my 3G 8gb for about half an hour trying to jailbreak it lol.. followed everyones suggestions and nothing worked… THEN i cracked it… Do all the update stuff first then unplug your iphone and reboot it. compatibility mode your blackra1n, RUN blackra1n and click “make it rain”… THEN and only then plug your iphone back into the computer… was over and done in 30 seconds, popped up wit the message telling me my iphone would be jailbroken once it had reboot and the image of the curly haired lad with the wave of iphones popped onto the screen… it rebooted and now its done. Cheers..” In addition I stopped all Antivirus services..

Hi Eric im on mac too and mine worked 1st go. Before you try this back up your device in itunes. Ok so when you’ve done that open up balckra1n and unlock your iPod and hit make it ra1n when the screen goes black hold down the power button and home button until it reeboots. This is the way I did it as I did research for a long time how to jailbreak when the jailbreakme.com website went down. I hope that help if not sorry and I hope something works. Oh yeh one more thing if this doesnt work try pwnage tool 3.4 it jailbreaks the firmware for you all you have to do is sync it in iTunes. Ok Bye Chuck
obviously you are doing something different, I have the identical ipod mand still cannot get it to work. What is that thing you are installing after the reboot, it looks like it is for a MAC? I know you said you are using VISTA but are you doing something with a MAC?
It doesn't work because I have Mac os x and each time I download blackra1n for mac I can't open it on my computer, what should I do? My ipod has a 3.2.1 version
