Which Macs Can Use HomePod Mini 2 as a Default Speaker

HomePod mini 2 can serve as the default speaker for a Mac. It works as a single speaker or as a stereo pair, and it covers everything from movies and games to FaceTime calls.

The feature runs on every Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later, which rules out a number of older machines. HomePod mini 2 costs $149 and launches on Friday, October 30.

HomePod as speakers for your Mac

Every Mac with Wi-Fi 6E or later can use it as the default speaker

Wi-Fi 6E is the cutoff, so the quickest way to check a Mac is by its release year. The Macs that qualify are listed below:

  • MacBook Pro introduced in 2023 or later
  • MacBook Air introduced in 2024 or later
  • MacBook Neo
  • iMac, Mac mini, Mac Studio, and Mac Pro introduced in 2023 or later

Anything older falls outside the list, including the 2022 MacBook Air with the M2 chip. Once HomePod mini 2 is set as the default speaker, system audio plays through it, and a stereo pair widens the sound for movies and music at a desk.

Older HomePod models stay on AirPlay

Owners of the original HomePod mini can still send Mac audio to it over AirPlay by choosing it from the sound output menu. That is a manual step each time, which is the difference from a default speaker that the Mac uses on its own.

The cutoff is worth checking before buying a pair for a desk. A Mac that cannot join Wi-Fi 6E networks will not get the default speaker option, even with two new speakers sitting next to it.

The same speaker works as a home hub and listens for smoke alarms

Outside Mac duty, HomePod mini 2 acts as a home hub, so it can control accessories from the Home app on an iPhone whether you are home or away. Its Sound Recognition feature listens for smoke and carbon monoxide alarms and sends a notification to an iPhone, iPad, and Apple Watch when it hears one.

Sound Recognition needs the updated Home architecture, and every Apple device that accesses the home has to run the latest software.

Five colors are built to sit beside a Mac

HomePod mini 2 comes in pink, green, blue, white, and midnight. Apple shows two pink speakers beside a color-matched iMac, which makes the pairing look intentional.

The speaker runs on the S10 chip and adds Sound Glow, a glowing top that pulses with the music and takes its colors from the album artwork. It also supports four-speaker surround sound with the new Apple TV 4K, and Siri AI is coming in a later software update.

HomePod mini 2 launches on Friday, October 30, and it is compatible with HomePod software 27.2.
