iPhone 17 Was the World’s Best-Selling Smartphone in Q2 2026

The iPhone 17 was the world’s best-selling smartphone model in the second quarter of 2026, according to Counterpoint Research’s Global Handset Model Sales Tracker, capturing 6% of all global smartphone unit sales. The iPhone 17 Pro Max and iPhone 17 Pro held the second and third positions; Apple and Samsung together occupied all top ten positions worldwide, capturing a combined 26% share of worldwide unit sales, up two points year-over-year, while the broader smartphone market contracted 11% in the same quarter.

The contraction stemmed from ongoing memory shortages and price increases that forced manufacturers to concentrate resources on their most profitable phones. Apple and Samsung both grew unit sales against this backdrop, defying the industry-wide downturn.

Why the Base Model Outsells All Rivals

The standard iPhone 17’s 6% market share nearly doubles the sales volume of any competing single smartphone model. Counterpoint senior analyst Harshit Rastogi attributed this dominance to upgrades that narrowed the traditional gap between the base and Pro tiers: a higher 256GB base storage capacity, improved cameras, and a faster 120Hz display refresh rate replaced the older 60Hz panel. These improvements made the entry-level model a credible alternative rather than a compromise, reducing friction for buyers deciding between tiers.

Geographic Expansion Beyond Core Markets

Apple’s growth came from regions outside its traditional strongholds. India saw a 15% rise in Apple sales between late March and early August 2026, even as the broader Indian market contracted 14%; Counterpoint attributed this to strong iPhone 17 demand paired with local affordability offers. South Korea sales nearly doubled in the period. Apple also posted gains in Japan and the Middle East and Africa, offsetting maturation and competitive pressure in established markets.

The premium segment itself expanded, smartphones priced at $600 and above accounted for a record 29% of overall market unit sales in the first half of 2026, up four percentage points year-over-year, with Apple controlling 65% of premium segment sales. In Latin America, Apple now accounts for roughly 51% of all smartphone sales above $600.

Absorbing Cost Inflation Rather Than Raising Prices

Memory component costs are rising sharply, yet Apple’s strategy during the first half of 2026 was to absorb these increases rather than raise iPhone prices. This approach contrasts with Samsung and other OEMs that passed cost inflation to consumers. Whether Apple sustains this margin pressure through the upcoming iPhone 18 cycle is not clear yet, particularly as foldable and premium positioning typically command higher price tags.

The Staggered iPhone 18 Launch

Apple’s September 2026 event will introduce the iPhone 18 Pro, iPhone 18 Pro Max, and a foldable model potentially called the iPhone Ultra. The more affordable base models will not arrive until spring 2027, a staggered rollout that lets Apple concentrate Q4 2026 revenue on higher-margin premium units and the foldable category. This timing also allows the company to reset pricing if component cost pressures prove unsustainable.

The iPhone 17 Pro Max‘s sustained dominance during a global market contraction reveals how premium positioning and a credible feature-rich base model insulate Apple from industry-wide headwinds that devastate competitors operating lower on the price stack.
