Apple’s third-generation foldable is expected to grow slightly. Mark Gurman says the iPhone Duo 3 will have an inner display roughly half an inch larger than the iPhone Duo, and that a telephoto camera is on Apple’s list for future models. The first iPhone Duo goes on sale tomorrow, October 23.
Bloomberg’s Gurman shared the details on today’s Power On podcast, where he looked ahead to the 2028 model. He had already said Apple wants to bring Face ID and a telephoto lens for the third-generation iPhone Duo, and today he got more specific about the screen size and the camera.
The iPhone Duo 3 Inner Display Is Expected to Grow by About Half an Inch
Gurman calls the change marginal and puts the increase at very roughly half an inch, which takes the current 7.6-inch panel to around 8.1 inches. In his words, the new size lands in the high sevens to very low eights, and nobody should expect an 8.5-inch or 9-inch screen.
The 5.4-inch outer display would not get much bigger. Gurman compares the move to how Apple sized up its Pro line, which went from 6.7 inches on the iPhone 15 Pro Max to 6.9 inches on the iPhone 16 Pro Max.
The foldable lineup looks like this so far:
- iPhone Duo: 7.6-inch inner display, 5.4-inch outer display, Touch ID and two rear cameras, starting at $1,999.
- iPhone Duo 2: expected next fall, with Face ID under the outer display in testing.
- iPhone Duo 3: expected in 2028, with an inner display around 8.1 inches and a telephoto camera still under consideration.
A Telephoto Camera Is on Apple’s List but Has No Date
Asked whether Apple will add a telephoto camera to a future iPhone Duo, Gurman was careful about timing.
That’s on their list. I don’t know when that’s coming, but that’s gonna be hard to do.
He says the obstacle is the depth a telephoto lens needs, and that cost is not the issue. He adds that it will be interesting to see how Apple solves it.
The missing telephoto lens is one of the most common complaints in the launch reviews of the iPhone Duo. The phone has a 48MP Fusion Main camera and a 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera, and its 2x option crops the main sensor instead of using a separate lens.
Gurman did not tie the telephoto camera to the iPhone Duo 3 this time. His September report pointed to smaller components and AI-driven processing as the way Apple would fit one into the third generation.
The iPhone Duo 3 Is Still Two Years Away
The iPhone Duo 3 is a 2028 product, so the display size and camera plans can change. The iPhone Duo 2 comes first, and a second-generation foldable is widely expected next fall.
The first iPhone Duo goes on sale Friday, October 23, in Night Sky and Star White, starting at $1,999 for 256GB.
