Apple has revealed how third-party apps will work on the iPhone Duo’s foldable display, and not every app will automatically take advantage of the larger screen. Apps will use one of three display modes depending on the version of iOS they were designed for.
The approach allows existing apps to remain functional on the foldable iPhone while giving developers a path to optimize their apps for the new display. Apps built specifically for iOS 27.1 will be able to use the full foldable screen.
Older Apps Will Use A Compatibility Mode
Apps that target an older version of iOS will open in a compatibility mode designed to prevent layout problems on the iPhone Duo.
These apps will remain within a safe area of the display, with a black background filling the unused space around the app. This means an older app may not visually stretch across the entire foldable screen.
The compatibility mode allows Apple to support existing apps without requiring developers to update them before the iPhone Duo launches.
iOS 27 Apps Can Use More Of The Display
Apps updated for iOS 27 will have access to more of the iPhone Duo’s display, although they may still leave some unused space depending on how the app is designed.
Developers can adapt their layouts for the larger foldable screen, but iOS 27 apps will not have the same level of display support as apps built specifically for iOS 27.1.
This creates an intermediate option between older apps and fully optimized foldable apps.
iOS 27.1 Apps Get Full Display Support
Apps built for iOS 27.1 will be able to make full use of the iPhone Duo’s foldable display.
Developers can design layouts specifically around the larger screen and its unique dimensions instead of relying on compatibility behavior intended for older apps.
This will likely provide the best experience on the iPhone Duo, particularly for apps with complex interfaces, media, productivity tools, and games.
Existing Apps Will Still Work
The three-mode system means iPhone Duo owners will not have to wait for every developer to update their apps.
Older apps can continue running through compatibility mode, while developers can gradually introduce iOS 27 and iOS 27.1-specific layouts. Users may therefore see different display behavior across apps depending on when each developer updates its software.
Apple is expected to use this approach to avoid the launch-day app compatibility problems that could otherwise come with introducing a completely new screen format.
iPhone Duo Launches In October
The iPhone Duo is scheduled to launch on October 23, with preorders beginning October 16.
Its app compatibility system gives developers multiple stages for adapting to the foldable display rather than requiring every app to be redesigned immediately.
For users, the biggest difference will be visible when comparing older apps with those updated for iOS 27.1. The latter will be able to take advantage of the iPhone Duo’s full screen.
