iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand Is Going Viral for Its Hinge

A clip of what appears to be Apple’s iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand in Taupe is getting attention for how it handles the hinge. The TechWoven fabric runs across both halves of the phone, with no separate hinge piece sitting over the fold.

The video comes from Japanese creator マメ (@jetdaizu), who posted it on September 11 and pointed out that the outer display side of the iPhone Duo is magnetic. That post has passed 18 million views at the time of writing.

The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand Wraps the Hinge in One Continuous Fabric Back

In the clip, the case comes off as a single piece. One half has the camera cutout, the other half is a flap that clings to the outer display side, and fabric joins the two across the fold. Apple’s product photos show the same back view, with one TechWoven surface running over both halves and only a faint crease where the phone bends.

Apple describes TechWoven as a custom technical fabric and calls the case thin and light. Built-in magnets line up with the iPhone Duo, which Apple says gives a secure attach and faster wireless charging every time:

  • Kickstand: built into the back and snaps flat when not in use, with angles for reading, watching video or FaceTime calls
  • Charging: the case stays on while a MagSafe, Qi2 25W or Qi-certified charger snaps on outside or behind the open kickstand
  • Colors: Taupe and Navy Blue

The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand Leaves the Frame Bare and Covers the Outer Display

Apple’s product photos show the titanium frame edges uncovered, so the case protects the back and the front but not the sides. Closed, the flap sits over the 5.4-inch outer display, so you have to open it to see anything on that screen. Features that use the outer display, such as Duo Preview and Duo FaceTime, need the flap folded back.

Some replies under the original post raised the same complaint, with one user calling the covered front screen an extra step just to see the phone. Anyone who wants more than fabric over the fold has to look at rugged iPhone Duo cases, where OtterBox, SUPCASE, ESR and Spigen all add hinge guards that close with the phone.

The contrast exists inside Apple’s own lineup, since both accessories launched alongside the foldable. Apple calls the iPhone Duo Case a two-part case in Sand or Navy Blue, and its photos show a visible break at the hinge.

The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand costs $129, which is $50 more than the iPhone Duo Case at $79.
