The iPhone Duo Is the First iPhone Without a Silent Switch or an Action Button

Every iPhone Apple has ever made has had a physical way to go silent. The original mute switch lasted from 2007 all the way through 2023, when Apple swapped it out for the customizable Action Button on the 15 Pro. The iPhone Duo breaks that streak completely. According to Apple’s own technical specifications page, the Duo has neither. No mute switch, no Action Button, nothing on the frame that toggles silent mode. It’s the first iPhone in almost two decades to leave that job entirely to software.

Nearly 20 Years of a Physical Mute Control, Gone

The spec sheet diagram shows exactly what’s on the Duo’s frame instead. Volume up and down sit at the top. Camera Control and the side button are on the right. USB-C sits at the bottom with the usual microphones and speakers. The left edge, where the Action Button has lived on every iPhone since the 15 Pro, is empty.

That button never went away on its own, Apple replaced the original mute switch with it in 2023 specifically because a customizable control felt more useful than a single fixed toggle. It could still default to Silent mode, but you could also set it to launch the flashlight, trigger a Focus, record a Voice Memo, run a Shortcut, or fire up Visual Intelligence. On the Duo, none of that lives on the hardware anymore. Silent mode moves into Control Center, and so does whatever else you used the Action Button for.

What’s on the Frame Instead

In place of the Action Button, the right side gets Camera Control, the capacitive button Apple introduced on the 16 lineup for launching the camera and taking photos with a light press or a full click. That same side also holds the power button, which doubles as Touch ID since the Duo doesn’t support Face ID. It’s a layout built around a foldable’s internal constraints rather than one Apple chose for its own sake, but the end result is a phone with fewer physical controls than any iPhone since before 2007.

Why Losing Two Buttons at Once Is a Bigger Deal Than It Sounds

Dropping one button is a design tweak but ropping both the mute switch’s original job and its Action Button successor on the same device, with nothing physical replacing either, is a genuine first for the iPhone. A lot of people rely on that side edge without even thinking about it, flicking it to silence a call in a meeting or reaching for it in the dark to hit the flashlight. On the iPhone Duo, every one of those moments now needs two taps into Control Center instead of one press on the frame.

It’s also worth watching whether this is unique to the folding form factor or a sign of where Apple is headed. For now it looks contained to the iPhone Duo. The iPhone 18 Pro and Pro Max, announced at the same event, both keep their Action Button exactly where it’s always been.
