iPhone Duo’s Custom Vapor Chamber Delivers 35% Better Sustained Performance Than iPhone 17 Pro

Apple’s first foldable iPhone had to solve a problem that doesn’t exist on a regular iPhone: how do you cool a powerful chip inside a chassis that folds in half and has to stay thin enough to be comfortable in your pocket. The answer, according to Apple’s official announcement, is a custom-designed vapor chamber built specifically for iPhone Duo.

Powered by the same A20 Pro chip found in iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, iPhone Duo pairs that chip with an advanced thermal management system that Apple says delivers up to 35% better sustained performance than iPhone 17 Pro. That’s a smaller jump than the 40% Apple is claiming for iPhone 18 Pro, which makes sense once you consider how much less internal room a foldable phone has to work with.

A Chip Package Built for a Foldable Body

Just like on iPhone 18 Pro, Apple redesigned the chip packaging on iPhone Duo using a layout inspired by its M-series chips. That new package connects A20 Pro directly to the custom vapor chamber, letting heat move out of the chip and into the cooling system without extra material getting in the way.

Apple says this setup lets A20 Pro hit peak performance almost immediately for on device AI tasks, while the vapor chamber keeps that performance level steady during longer sessions like high frame rate gaming or heavy multitasking across the two displays.

Why Cooling Is Harder on a Foldable Phone

A regular iPhone has one continuous piece of internal space to work with. A foldable has to split that space around a hinge, a folding display stack, and in iPhone Duo’s case, two separate batteries. That leaves a lot less room for a traditional cooling setup, and it’s part of why foldable phones from other manufacturers have historically struggled with sustained performance compared to their non-folding counterparts.

Building a vapor chamber that fits into that constrained space, while still being effective enough to matter, is one of the more genuinely difficult engineering problems on iPhone Duo. Apple pairing it with a dual-battery architecture on top of that adds even more pressure on internal space, which makes the thermal design here arguably a bigger achievement than the version on iPhone 18 Pro, even with the smaller headline performance number.

What This Means for How iPhone Duo Actually Performs

The A20 Pro inside iPhone Duo isn’t a scaled down version of the chip in iPhone 18 Pro, it’s the same silicon. That means the real difference between the two devices comes down to how well each one can keep that chip cool under sustained load, which is exactly what this vapor chamber is designed to address.

For anyone planning to use iPhone Duo’s larger 7.6 inch inner display for gaming, video editing, or heavy Split View multitasking, this is the piece of engineering that determines whether that experience stays smooth over time or starts to slow down the longer you use it. Combined with the dual-battery setup, it points to Apple treating iPhone Duo as a genuine performance device rather than just a novelty foldable.
