Apple’s OLED iPad Mini Is Rumored to Stay at 60Hz Without ProMotion

A second rumor says Apple’s OLED iPad mini is staying at 60Hz and skipping ProMotion. The claim repeats what the same source said in July.

The latest post comes from yeux1122, a blogger on Naver who says production volumes already confirm a 60Hz panel. The blogger adds that some overseas sources mention 120Hz, and made the same 60Hz claim in July.

The Display Is the Open Question on an Otherwise Big iPad Mini Upgrade

The iPad mini is expected to get its first OLED display this fall. Mark Gurman describes the update as substantial but straightforward, with a better screen, a faster chip and a FaceTime camera on the landscape edge.

Earlier reports also describe a speaker system without grille holes and water resistance, which would be a first for any iPad. The current iPad mini 7 uses an A17 Pro chip, so the rumored upgrades would be a big step up for the line.

Samsung Display began mass producing the OLED panels in June at its Asan campus in South Korea, which fits an iPad mini launch this year. The panel is reported to measure 8.4 inches, and Apple first brought OLED to the iPad Pro in May 2024, so the iPad mini would get it more than two years later.

A 60Hz OLED Panel Would Leave the iPad Mini Behind the iPad Pro

ProMotion on the iPad Pro scales between 10Hz and 120Hz using LTPO OLED panels. LTPS panels have a fixed refresh rate and tend to be dimmer, as covered in our earlier iPad mini report.

The current iPad mini already tops out at 60Hz, so an OLED panel at the same rate would improve contrast and color without making scrolling any smoother. The base iPhone 17 has a 120Hz ProMotion display, which makes a 60Hz iPad mini stand out more.

The iPad mini 7 starts at $599 for the 128GB Wi-Fi model and reaches $899 for 512GB after Apple’s June price increase. Earlier reports pointed to $699 for the OLED version, and Apple has not announced pricing.

The OLED iPad Mini Is Still Expected Within Weeks

Gurman expects the OLED iPad mini between late October and November. Our October product roundup tracks the full list.
