Apple’s Touchscreen MacBook Pro Is Reportedly Not Getting Much Thinner

Mark Gurman does not expect Apple’s redesigned MacBook Pro to end up much thinner than today’s models. The touchscreen OLED laptop is still expected to be much lighter.

Gurman shared the comment in a post on X on October 7. He wrote that he does not think it will be significantly thinner in the end, and Apple has not announced the laptop or its dimensions.

Apple’s Weight Cut Is Reportedly Coming From a Rebuilt Interior

In his Power On newsletter on October 4, Gurman said the new MacBook Pro models are significantly lighter, and that Apple miniaturized parts and rearranged components inside the machine. Smaller parts and a new layout can cut weight without changing the height of the case, which fits both of his comments.

Gurman has not said how much weight Apple removed or which sizes get the lighter build. The current weights show how much room there is.

  • 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max: 4.7 pounds, which is 1.4 pounds heavier than the 15-inch MacBook Air
  • 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5, M5 Pro or M5 Max: 3.4 to 3.6 pounds, or 0.1 to 0.3 pounds heavier than the 15-inch MacBook Air
  • 15-inch MacBook Air with M5: 3.3 pounds

The 16-inch model has the most weight to lose, and the 14-inch model is already close to the 15-inch MacBook Air. Earlier reports describe both 14-inch and 16-inch OLED models, and our MacBook Ultra guide lists the rumored chips, display details and price.

The Touchscreen MacBook Pro Is Still Tracking for October or November

Gurman said on his podcast that Apple should introduce the laptop in October, and that it could slip to November. Apple is testing it internally on macOS 27.2, which already includes touch gestures and another touchscreen hint in beta 3.

The laptop is expected to bring an OLED display and touch support. Apple has not announced an event for it, and the OLED MacBook Pro is often called the MacBook Ultra, a name Apple has not confirmed.

It is one of several products on Apple’s fall calendar, including the October 13 home event and the iPhone Duo launch on October 23. Our report on Apple’s October launch plans lays out the dates.
