Apple’s Touchscreen OLED MacBook Pro Is Reportedly Much Lighter Than Today’s Models

Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook Pro is expected to be much lighter than the laptop it replaces. The redesigned machine moves to an OLED display, and Apple has reportedly rebuilt the interior to make it easier to carry.

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman shared the detail in his Power On newsletter on Sunday. He says the new MacBook Pros are significantly lighter, and that Apple miniaturized parts and rearranged components inside the machine to get there. Apple has not announced the laptop or its weight.

The Current 16-Inch MacBook Pro Weighs 4.7 Pounds, So a Real Cut Would Be Obvious

Gurman compares the current 16-inch MacBook Pro with the 15-inch MacBook Air to show how big a reduction would feel. Here is where three of Apple’s current laptops sit today:

  • 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max: 4.7 pounds
  • 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5, M5 Pro or M5 Max: 3.4 to 3.6 pounds
  • 15-inch MacBook Air with M5: 3.3 pounds

The 16-inch MacBook Pro is 1.4 pounds heavier than the 15-inch MacBook Air, while the 14-inch MacBook Pro is within 0.1 to 0.3 pounds of it. Gurman does not say how much weight Apple removed or which sizes get the lighter build. He refers to the new MacBook Pros in the plural, and earlier reports describe 14-inch and 16-inch OLED models. Gurman Expects the Touchscreen MacBook Pro to Arrive by Next Month

Apple is testing the laptops with macOS 27.2, and Gurman expects them to arrive by next month. That lines up with his comments on the debut episode of his podcast, where he said Apple should introduce the laptop in October and that it could slip to November, as covered in our earlier report.

Gurman calls the switch to a touch screen significant, and the same goes for the move to OLED, which offers sharper contrast. He says macOS Golden Gate includes changes to support touch input and the Dynamic Island. macOS 27.2 is already in developer beta, and Apple’s OLED MacBook Pro models were already running macOS 27.1 inside Apple in mid-September.

The laptop is one of several Apple products due this fall. Gurman says Apple will hold an event on October 13 for its smart home hub, HomePod mini and Apple TV, all built around Siri AI, and the iPhone Duo ships October 23. Our October product roundup lists the full lineup. Gurman calls the first OLED iPad mini a substantial but straightforward upgrade, with a better screen, a faster chip and a landscape-oriented FaceTime camera. It is due between late October and November.

Our Take

Weight is the change that users would notice most day to day. Touch and OLED are easy to show off in a demo, but a lighter body is what makes a laptop easier to live with.
