Apple has added code for new touch gestures to macOS Golden Gate 27.2, and it covers Safari, Notes, Photos, and Quick Look. The references have people asking whether a touchscreen Mac is close, since an OLED MacBook Ultra is already rumored for late 2026.
As reported by MacRumors, the macOS Golden Gate 27.2 touch gestures sit in the code of the latest macOS Golden Gate 27.2 beta, which Apple released to developers on October 5. The code adds new gesture recognition tools to several Apple apps. It does not say how any of them will behave on screen.
Safari, Notes, Photos, and Quick Look Each Get Their Own Touch Gesture Code
Each app gets a different addition, and the labels come straight from the code.
- Safari gets a touch sentinel recognizer.
- Photos has PXGTouchDwellGestureRecognizer.
- Notes has ICTouchPressGestureRecognizer.
- Quick Look gets a dragTouch feature.
The names point to press, dwell, and drag inputs. Apple has not said what any of them do, and the beta does not show how they work.
Touch-friendly changes began before this beta. Pull-to-refresh gestures arrived in Safari, Mail, and Calendar with the launch version of macOS Golden Gate, and that change was already feeding the argument that Apple’s first touchscreen MacBook looks inevitable.
Beta 3 also carries Siri AI in new languages along with redesigned brightness and volume sliders. The sliders are covered in our post on the redesigned volume and brightness sliders.
The Same Gesture Code Also Fits Sidecar Touch Input on iPad
The code could belong to a touchscreen MacBook, and it applies to Sidecar as well. macOS Golden Gate brought full touch input to Sidecar, the feature that lets an iPad work as a display for a Mac. Apple may be expanding those features, so the code does not confirm a new Mac.
The rumored OLED MacBook Ultra with touchscreen support is described as thinner and lighter than current MacBooks, with a Dynamic Island and M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. It could launch as soon as late 2026, and our MacBook Ultra release date, chips, and price guide tracks the rest of the rumors.
Samsung Display is reported to be the exclusive supplier of the OLED touchscreen panels for the MacBook Ultra, with an estimated first run of 250,000 panels. Apple has not announced a touchscreen Mac of any kind.
macOS Golden Gate 27.2 is expected toward the end of October, so the final build will show whether any of these gestures get a visible setting.
