Touchscreen MacBook Pro Reportedly Gets Thinner Bezels, New Hinge

Apple’s touchscreen MacBook Pro is reportedly getting thinner bezels and a revamped hinge, two design details that had not come up in earlier reports. Apple is expected to unveil the laptop on October 28, and the new hinge is meant to keep the screen steady when you touch it.

Mark Gurman shared the details in a post on X on October 26. He wrote that Apple will promote the OLED touch MacBook Pro on Wednesday, October 28 for a slightly thinner case, thinner bezels and a noticeably lighter body, plus a hinge that is more stable. None of this is confirmed, since Apple has not announced the laptop.

The revamped hinge is meant to stop the screen from rocking when you touch it

Anyone who has poked at a touchscreen laptop knows the display can wobble on its hinge. Gurman says Apple’s new hinge is more stable, so touching the screen does not make it rock during use. He calls it one of the big things Apple will be touting.

Apple has not shown the hinge yet, but it matters because touch is meant to sit next to the keyboard and trackpad, and macOS Golden Gate 27.2 already includes touch gestures. Gurman also wrote in his Power On newsletter on October 25 that reaching up to a vertical display gets uncomfortable after a few seconds.

Hinges are already in the news at Apple. Teardowns of cracked iPhone Duo units point to the middle of the hinge, and Apple says the cracking affects a small number of units.

The lighter body was already reported, and the bezels and hinge are new

Gurman’s post names four design changes, and only the thinner bezels and the hinge are new compared with his earlier reporting.

  • Slightly thinner case: Gurman said on October 7 that he does not expect a much thinner laptop, so this fits.
  • Noticeably lighter: Gurman reported on October 4 that the new MacBook Pro models are significantly lighter because Apple miniaturized parts and rearranged components.
  • Thinner bezels: New in this post, with no word yet on how much thinner they are or whether the screen size changes.
  • Revamped hinge: Also new, and nothing has been said about what Apple changed.

The current 16-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro or M5 Max weighs 4.7 pounds, and the 14-inch model weighs 3.4 to 3.6 pounds. Gurman has not said how much weight Apple removed or which sizes get the lighter build.

The touchscreen MacBook Pro is expected in 14-inch and 16-inch sizes with OLED and the Dynamic Island

Earlier reports describe 14-inch and 16-inch models with an OLED display and the Dynamic Island in place of the notch. They are expected to run the M5 Pro and M5 Max, and Gurman expects the price to land well above the current $2,499 starting price.

Apple has already launched the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M6 at $1,999, and it keeps the current design. The redesigned model is the one expected at Apple’s Pro and Tell launch on October 28 at 10 a.m. Pacific Time in Los Angeles.

Apple has not confirmed a date, but Gurman says the touchscreen MacBook Pro could go on sale Friday, November 6, based on a floor reset planned at Apple Stores the evening before.
