iPhone Duo Screen Cracks Point to a Hinge Stress Spot

Cracked inner screens on the iPhone Duo now have two possible explanations, and both involve the central part of the hinge. Neither is confirmed, but each points at a specific part under the display.

iPhone Duo Screen Cracks Point to a Hinge Stress Spot

In its iPhone Duo teardown, iFixit built a 3D hinge model from teardown footage, patents and CT scans, then compared it with the damage owners reported. The breaks cluster slightly below where the display cable passes through the hinge, at a point where several edges meet and change how the thin display is supported. In iFixit’s CT overlay of one broken screen, the damaged row and column of pixels intersect just below where the display cable passes through the center of the hinge.

The reported cracks follow a similar pattern across owners

Owners who posted cracked inner screens after launch describe a noise when opening or closing the phone, then a line down the fold and a bright line across the display. One reported it within six hours of buying the phone and another before finishing setup, and Apple is replacing affected units for now. Some can see nothing wrong with the screen or hinge by eye, which fits a localized fault that can knock out a whole row or column of pixels.

One of iFixit’s simulations offers a possible explanation, with the center support bar failing to drop far enough so the folded screen comes down onto it and creates a small stress hotspot near the reported break location. The accordion-style flex cable that joins the two halves does not look responsible, since the damage sits slightly below where it passes through.

A second teardown found a snapped link in the middle of the hinge

In a video, YouTuber CuriousHagi opened a cracked iPhone Duo and found the middle link of the hinge snapped at its notch. The link is thinner than the ones above and below it and meshes with the upper support plate.

On the broken side of that plate there are heavy crush marks, and the display shows impact marks in the same spot where the broken piece lines up. He believes the internals meshed wrong during testing and the snapped piece then struck the panel.

After he bent the phone backward on purpose in an earlier durability test, it stuck at one angle when he opened it, and the display cracked when he pushed harder. That makes this one dissected unit and not proof of a pattern, although he says units used normally have broken in the same spot. He found no debris in the gear section that could have caught on the link.

His advice is to stop if the phone resists at a certain angle and take it to an Apple service center instead of forcing it open. A cracked iPhone Duo display costs $999 to replace without coverage and $99 with AppleCare+.
