The iPhone Duo costs $1,999 and has two parts that a regular iPhone does not, a hinge built from more than 100 components and an inner display that scratches at level 2 on the Mohs scale. Looking after both takes a few habits that are new for iPhone owners.
Both parts have already shown weak spots. A public durability test ended with dust jamming the hinge, and owners have posted cracked inner screens near the fold since launch on October 23. Apple has not confirmed a cause for the cracks, and an inner display repair costs $999 without AppleCare+.
| Part | Biggest risk | Habit that helps |
|---|---|---|
| Hinge | Dust and grit | Keep the phone closed in pockets and bags |
| Inner display | Scratches and pressure on the fold | Leave the cover layer on and hold the frame |
| Outer display | Drops and edge impacts | Use a case |
| Batteries | Heat | Keep Optimized Battery Charging on |
| Repair bill | $999 for the inner display | Add AppleCare+ |
1. Dust is the biggest threat to the iPhone Duo hinge
In the durability test, sand and dirt got in at a few points around the hinge. Enough collected inside the titanium hinge that the magnets could no longer pull the phone shut, and the magnets on the back used for wireless charging picked up dust as well.
The IP68 rating covers the enclosure and does not appear to include a foldable’s hinge mechanism. A few habits keep grit out.
- Close the phone before it goes into a pocket or bag.
- Keep it away from sand, drywall dust and other fine powder, and do not leave it open on a beach towel.
- Wipe the seam between the halves and the magnet area on the back with a dry, lint-free cloth.
- Skip compressed air, which should never be used to clean an iPhone.
2. Open it with two hands and stop if the hinge resists
The hinge resists by design and magnets hold the halves shut, so opening the iPhone Duo takes two hands. Hold the frame and open it in one smooth motion instead of pushing on the middle of the inner display.
Bending it backward puts the inner display at risk, since a single bend in the same durability test left a permanent green line across it and a second bend added another. A teardown video of a cracked unit advises stopping if the phone resists at a certain angle and taking it to an Apple service center instead of forcing it open.
3. The inner display scratches at level 2, so keep it shut around keys
A nano-textured cover layer made from a custom polymer sits over the inner display. The matte finish hides scratches while the screen is on, but the marks show once it turns off, and isopropyl alcohol does not wipe them away.
Keys and coins rank above level 2 on the Mohs scale, and so does sand. Keep the phone closed whenever it shares a pocket or bag with them.
Peeling the cover layer off makes colors look brighter, but glare comes back, and Apple replaces the layer for $49, or $19 with AppleCare+.
4. Add a case and leave the inner display alone
Apple sells the iPhone Duo Case for $79 in sand or navy blue, a two-part design that wraps both halves and attaches with adhesive. The iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand costs $129 in navy blue or taupe. Once a case is on, turn on Shift Left Edge in Settings > Display & Brightness so the outer display content clears the front edge of the case.
Third-party iPhone Duo cases range from clear hinge cases to rotating kickstands. A screen protector makes the most sense on the outer display, which is rigid Ceramic Shield 2 glass. The inner display bends every time the phone folds, so a rigid protector cannot follow it.
5. Water resistance fades and liquid damage is not covered
The iPhone Duo is rated IP68 for up to 6 meters and 30 minutes in lab conditions. That resistance is not permanent and can drop with normal wear, and liquid damage is not covered by the warranty.
If the phone gets wet, wipe it down and let it dry before you charge it. Charging a wet iPhone can damage the connector.
6. Clean it with a lint-free cloth and keep moisture out of the hinge
Turn the phone off and unplug every cable first. Wipe the frame, back and outer display with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth, and keep moisture out of every opening, including the seam around the hinge.
For disinfecting, 70 percent isopropyl alcohol wipes, 75 percent ethyl alcohol wipes and Clorox Disinfecting Wipes are safe on exterior surfaces. Bleach, hydrogen peroxide, window cleaner, household cleaners, aerosol sprays, solvents, ammonia and abrasives are not. On the inner display, stay with a soft, dry, lint-free cloth and light pressure.
7. Heat and charging habits decide how long the two batteries last
Each half of the iPhone Duo has its own battery, and iOS runs them as one. Long stretches in direct sun or a hot car wear batteries faster, so keep the phone out of heat. If you store it for weeks, leave it about half charged.
Keep Optimized Battery Charging on in Settings > Battery > Charging, one of the 12 settings worth changing on a new iPhone Duo. It pauses charging at 80 percent and finishes closer to when you usually unplug the phone. Battery service costs $229 without AppleCare+ and is free once capacity falls below 80 percent with coverage.
8. Book Apple service if the phone clicks, sticks or shows a line
Owners who reported cracked inner screens describe a noise when opening or closing the phone, then a line down the fold and a bright line across the display. If you hear or feel anything like that, stop opening it and take it to an Apple Store or an Apple Authorized Service Provider. If the display has already cracked, keep the phone closed, use the outer display and back up the phone while touch still works.
Apple’s repair manual has a dedicated Hinge Issues page, but it is written for technicians. Damage from repairs done outside Apple’s network is not covered by the warranty or AppleCare plans, and it can make the phone ineligible for future Apple repairs.
9. AppleCare+ turns a $999 inner display repair into $99
AppleCare+ for the iPhone Duo costs $19.99 per month, $199.99 per year or $399 upfront. With coverage, inner display damage and other accidental damage cost $99 each, the outer display and back glass cost $29 each, the cover layer costs $19 and theft or loss costs $149.
Without it, the repair fees run from $49 for the cover layer to $999 for the inner display and $1,499 for other damage. The upfront plan plus one inner display repair totals $498, which is $501 below the uncovered fee.
