12 iPhone Duo Settings to Change Right After Setup

iPhone Duo has no Face ID, no Ring/Silent switch and no Action button, so a few settings matter more here than on any other iPhone. The foldable’s two displays add several more that do not exist on a regular iPhone.

Most take under a minute, and the unlock and Silent Mode changes are the two you will notice every day.

1. Install the newer iOS 27.1 build before you restore anything

iPhone Duo ships with iOS 27.1 and asks you to install a newer build of it during setup. Do that on Wi-Fi before you restore a backup or move apps. If you skipped the prompt, go to Settings > General > Software Update.

iOS 27.2 is expected before the end of October, so check again then.

2. Three Touch ID settings make unlocking iPhone Duo faster

Touch ID sits in the side button and reads your finger whether the phone is folded shut or open. Open Settings > Touch ID & Passcode and make three changes to speed up unlocking iPhone Duo.

  • Turn off Rest Finger to Open so the phone unlocks immediately. The same switch is under Settings > Accessibility > Side Button.
  • Tap Add a Fingerprint for the finger that lands on the sensor when the phone is open, not only the one you use when it is folded.
  • Turn on Unlock with Apple Watch if you wear one.

3. Silent Mode has to go in Control Center because there is no switch

iPhone Duo is the first iPhone without a Silent switch or an Action button, so the control for silencing it has to be added by hand. Swipe down from the top-right corner to open Control Center, tap the plus button, tap Add a Control and choose Silent Mode. Drag it somewhere your thumb reaches without a stretch.

4. Put your old Action button shortcut on the Lock Screen instead

On iPhone Duo the Lock Screen controls run along the side of the display instead of the bottom. Anything you ran from an Action button on another iPhone can live there.

Touch and hold the Lock Screen, tap Customize, then tap the Lock Screen. Tap the remove button on one of the controls, tap the add button that replaces it, and choose Silent Mode, Flashlight or a Shortcut.

5. Fixed Position Volume Controls decides whether the volume buttons follow rotation

iPhone Duo can switch its volume buttons around as you rotate the phone. Open Settings > Sounds & Haptics to find Fixed Position Volume Controls, which locks each button to one job in every orientation. Turn it off and the button at the top or right always raises the volume, however you hold the phone.

Dynamic buttons are meant to be the default, but some units arrive with the switch on, so check which way yours is set. Rotation Lock changes this too, since the buttons then follow the orientation the phone is locked to.

6. Camera Control opens the camera, so set up how it responds

iPhone Duo has Camera Control on the right side, next to the side button. Open Settings > Camera > Camera Control to adjust how firmly it responds to a press.

It only opens the camera, so use the Lock Screen controls from the previous item for anything else you used to run from an Action button.

7. Auto FPS improves low-light video, even in 4K

Open Settings > Camera > Record Video. iPhone can improve low-light video by automatically dropping the frame rate to 24 fps, and on iPhone Duo that Auto FPS setting also works when you record in 4K. Tap Auto FPS to choose which frame rates it applies to.

The same screen lists the formats the phone supports, including 4K at up to 120 fps.

8. StandBy now runs on either display without a charger

Partially fold iPhone Duo like a book or like a tent while you are on the Lock Screen, then set it down. It enters StandBy on the outer or inner display, even when it is not charging, and works as a clock, a photo frame or a hub for widgets. Open Settings > StandBy to make sure it is on and to choose which positions start it.

iPhone Duo StandBy Mode

Turn on Only While Charging if you want StandBy to run only when the phone is on a charger, which saves battery on a nightstand. To switch faces, tap the current face and swipe left or right. The Modular face can also rotate your widgets through the day with Smart Rotate.

9. The open phone shows two Home Screen pages, so rearrange both

When iPhone Duo opens, the inner display shows two Home Screen pages together, with Today View, a vertically scrolling list of widgets, on the left. The Dock moves to the side as well.

Touch and hold an empty spot on the Home Screen, tap Edit, and move the apps and widgets you use most onto the pages you will see with the phone open.

10. Shift Left Edge fixes the outer display when the case is on

After you snap on the iPhone Duo Case, a prompt on the inner display points you to Settings. You can also go to Settings > Display & Brightness and turn on Shift Left Edge at any time. It moves the outer display content over to clear the front edge of the case.

The iPhone Duo Case comes in sand and navy blue, and the iPhone Duo Folio with Kickstand comes in navy blue and taupe.

11. iPhone Duo is eSIM only, so move your plan during setup

There is no SIM tray on iPhone Duo, in any country. If your carrier supports eSIM Quick Transfer or eSIM Carrier Activation, you can move your number during setup.

If you skipped it, go to Settings > Cellular, tap Set Up Cellular or Add eSIM, then choose Transfer From Nearby iPhone or scan the QR code your carrier gave you. Once the number moves, it stops working on your old iPhone.

The phone can store more than one eSIM plan and switch between them. Under Add eSIM, View Travel Options lists a temporary plan for trips abroad.

12. Leave Optimized Battery Charging on to slow battery wear

Go to Settings > Battery > Charging and check that Optimized Battery Charging is on. It pauses charging at 80 percent and finishes closer to when you usually unplug the phone, which helps extend the battery’s lifespan.

It needs a regular routine to learn from, so it may not kick in when you travel or charge at odd times. If you need a full charge sooner, tap Resume Charging in Settings > Battery.

Each half of iPhone Duo has its own battery, and the two work together as one. iPhone Duo is rated for up to 31 hours of video playback on the inner display and up to 44 hours on the outer display.
