Every foldable phone maker has been chasing the same holy grail for years, and that is a crease you cannot see or feel when the screen is fully open. Samsung has gotten closer with each new Galaxy Z Fold, and the Galaxy Z Fold 8 is arguably the best attempt yet from the Android side. But after spending time with the iPhone Duo and hearing directly from Apple CEO John Ternus about how the company approached the problem, it is clear Apple took a completely different path to get there, and the results speak for themselves.

Nano-Texture Display Technology Makes the Jump to a Foldable
The secret behind the iPhone Duo’s nearly invisible crease is not a new hinge mechanism or a thicker display stack. It comes down to the nano-texture display finish that Apple first introduced on the Mac Studio Display, before bringing it to the iPad Pro and the MacBook Pro. That same matte, glare reducing surface has now made its way to a foldable iPhone for the first time, and it changes the entire experience of using the device.
During a sit down interview with Tom’s Guide and TechRadar, Ternus explained that once his team saw the nano-texture finish working on an early foldable prototype, they knew immediately they had found the right direction. He described the reaction internally as an instant realization that this was the answer they had been searching for, and from there the focus shifted entirely toward figuring out how to bring that finish to market on a device people would actually buy.
Why a Matte Finish Hides a Crease Better Than Glass
The nano-texture treatment works by scattering light across the display surface instead of allowing it to reflect off a single smooth plane. On a traditional glass panel, even a slight dip or ridge in the display becomes visible because light bounces unevenly off the surface. A matte, textured finish breaks up that reflection pattern, which makes subtle imperfections like a fold line far less noticeable to the eye, and in the case of the iPhone Duo, far less noticeable to the touch as well.
What makes this especially interesting from an engineering standpoint is that Apple had to reinvent the manufacturing process entirely for a foldable use case. The nano-texture finish on the Mac Studio Display, iPad Pro and MacBook Pro sits on top of a rigid glass surface. A foldable phone needs a flexible polymer surface that can bend thousands of times without cracking, and applying that same anti-glare treatment to a material that flexes instead of one that stays rigid required Apple to develop a new production method from scratch.
A Different Approach From the Rest of the Foldable Market
Most foldable phones on the market today rely on a glossy or semi glossy screen protector layer to manage durability, and that glossy surface tends to make any crease more visible under normal lighting. Apple’s decision to go the opposite direction, prioritizing a matte finish specifically to mask the fold line, is a good example of how the company approached the entire iPhone Duo project differently than its competitors.
It also lines up with something Apple has said repeatedly heading into this launch, which is that the company was never trying to be first to market with a foldable phone. It was trying to be the company that got the experience right once it did arrive. Based on hands on impressions so far, the nano-texture display appears to be one of the clearest examples of that philosophy actually paying off.
The iPhone Duo goes on sale in October with a starting price of $1,999, and if the crease reduction holds up under everyday use the way it did during early testing, it could end up being the single feature that convinces longtime foldable skeptics to finally make the switch.
