Apple says the folding display on the iPhone Duo has a cover layer that owners can replace. When the layer wears, it can be peeled off and swapped for a new one.
Kate Bergeron, Apple’s VP of Hardware Engineering, described the design in a TikTok interview with @angietutorials. She said the matte display coating does a good job of minimizing the crease. Apple has also put significant engineering work into the cover layer on top, so it holds up for as long as possible. She then explained how the replacement works.
“…you can peel off that layer and get a new one.”
Foldable displays tend to show a more visible crease over time. A top layer that can be removed and replaced gives the iPhone Duo a way to reset that wear, and Bergeron called it a benefit for the customer.
Apple Lists the iPhone Duo Cover Layer Replacement at $19 With AppleCare
Apple names the cover layer in its list of estimated AppleCare service costs for the iPhone Duo. Quinn Nelson spotted the entry, which puts a replacement at $19 for customers with AppleCare.
That makes the cover layer an official service item. Apple has not published a price for customers without coverage, so that figure is still unknown. The iPhone Duo starts at $1,999 in the US.
The Replaceable Layer Sits on Top of a 10-Layer Folding Display
Apple has already detailed the rest of the display stack. The 10-layer folding display uses glass above and below the panel, a titanium plate at the bottom and adhesives between the layers that let them slide against each other as the phone folds.
The outermost layer of the inner display is a custom nano-textured polymer that Apple says is up to 40 percent stiffer than other materials used in the industry. A scratch-resistant coating goes over it. The finish cuts glare and makes the fold less visible.
Apple’s hardware chief has said the hinge was the hardest problem to solve. The hinge uses more than 100 individual components, and the phone adds internal support ribs and a titanium panel under the display. Apple has not published a fold cycle rating, while Samsung rates the Galaxy Z Fold8 for 500,000 folds.
On the crease itself, Apple’s product page and press release both say the nano-texture finish minimizes crease visibility. Neither one claims the crease is gone.
Apple announced the iPhone Duo on September 10. Pre-orders open on October 16, and the phone launches on October 23.
Our Take
A $19 swap is small money on a $1,999 phone, and it gives crease wear a clear fix that owners can price in. I would still want to see the cost without AppleCare before pre-orders open, since that is what owners face if they skip coverage.
