Apple’s new Vice President of Hardware Engineering, Tom Marieb, sat down with TechRadar for a group interview at the company’s London office, and the conversation covered two of the more scrutinized parts of the iPhone Duo and iPhone 18 Pro, how durable the phones’ glass actually is, and how Apple kept a folding hinge from feeling loose. Marieb holds the same job current Apple CEO John Ternus held before him.
According to the interview published by TechRadar, Marieb walked through what changed with Ceramic Shield 2 and why the iPhone Duo’s hinge took, in his words, a long time to get right.
Ceramic Shield 2 Is Built to Make Screen Protectors Unnecessary
Ceramic Shield 2 ships on the iPhone 18 Pro and covers the outer display of the iPhone Duo, and Apple says it delivers three times the scratch resistance of the original Ceramic Shield. Marieb said the goal was coatings that resist scratches without giving up wear resistance over years of use, and that Apple compresses roughly five years of real-world wear into a couple of weeks of accelerated testing to get there.
He was blunt about what that means for aftermarket screen protectors. It makes my skin crawl
when he sees someone put one on an iPhone, he told TechRadar, given how much engineering goes into the glass itself.
The Hinge Was the Harder Problem to Solve
The iPhone Duo’s hinge has to hold its position in more configurations than a typical foldable’s. Beyond fully open or fully closed, Apple built dedicated Seated and Standing modes that hold the phone at a fixed angle for extended periods. Seated lays the phone flat with viewing controls on the bottom half of the screen, similar to a handheld game console, while Standing props it up like a tent for StandBy widgets, a bedside clock, or watching video on the outer display at an angle.
Getting the hinge to hold firmly at every one of those angles, without feeling loose or springy in the middle, took what Marieb described as a long time to get right. He pointed to concerns that a phone this thin would feel fragile as exactly the impression Apple was trying to avoid.
A Nano-Texture Display Built to Bend
The iPhone Duo’s 7.6-inch inner display uses a nano-texture finish similar in concept to the anti-glare glass option on Apple’s high-end MacBooks and the Pro Display XDR, adapted into something that folds in half. Apple’s own product pages describe the inner display as 10 ultra-thin layers held together with optically clear adhesives that let the layers glide against each other as the phone folds, which is what keeps the crease from becoming a stress point over time.
Apple has not published a specific hinge cycle rating or a numeric measurement of the display crease, two details that have mattered to buyers of past foldables and remain missing from Apple’s own materials.
The iPhone Duo measures 5.2mm thick when open and 11.3mm closed, weighs 254 grams, and carries an IP68 rating to a depth of 6 meters for up to 30 minutes.
Our Take
The hinge story is more convincing than the screen protector line, mostly because it is backed by something concrete. Seated and Standing modes only work if the hinge holds its position reliably at angles beyond fully open or fully closed, and a phone that cannot hold a StandBy angle without drifting would make both of those modes useless within a week. Marieb’s comments explain the design intent well, but the real test is still the missing numbers. A published cycle rating for that hinge would tell buyers a lot more than another quote about how hard the team worked.
