Apple has revealed more about the technology behind the iPhone Duo’s folding display, including a 10-layer structure designed to withstand repeated bending. The company has combined ultra-thin materials, high-strength glass, titanium, and specialized adhesives to protect the flexible panel.
The inner display also uses a custom nano-textured polymer cover that Apple says is up to 40 percent stiffer than other materials used in the industry. Its surface is designed to reduce glare and make the display crease less noticeable.
Apple Built The Folding Display In 10 Layers
The iPhone Duo’s inner screen uses 10 ultrathin layers stacked together to create a flexible but durable display assembly.
High-strength glass sits above and below the folding display panel, while a titanium plate forms the bottom of the structure. Apple also uses custom adhesives between the layers, allowing them to move slightly against each other as the phone folds and unfolds.
This movement is designed to distribute bending stress rather than concentrating it in a single part of the display. Apple compares the movement of the layers to pages in a book sliding against each other.
The outermost layer is made from a custom polymer with a nano-textured finish. The material is designed to provide additional stiffness while reducing reflections and making the fold in the display less visible.
A scratch-resistant coating is applied over the nano-textured layer to provide additional protection during everyday use.
The Inner And Outer Displays Use Different Protection
Apple is using different protective materials for the two iPhone Duo displays.
The outer display is protected by Ceramic Shield 2, the same material used on the iPhone 18 Pro models. The rear of the device uses Ceramic Shield, while the inner folding display relies on its custom polymer cover instead of Ceramic Shield.
Both displays support ProMotion, Always-On display, and True Tone. They can also reach up to 3,000 nits of peak outdoor brightness.
The combination gives the iPhone Duo a large foldable screen without treating the inner and outer panels as identical components. The inner display requires a flexible multi-layer structure, while the external screen can use Apple’s more conventional Ceramic Shield protection.
