macOS Golden Gate 27.2 Hints at Touchscreen Mac by Making Safari Tabs Touch-Friendly

macOS Golden Gate 27.2 is getting Safari changes built for touch. Tabs lift and scale as you drag them to reorder, and tapping and holding a tab opens its context menu. The touch version of that menu leaves out Ask Siri.

The details come from a post on X by pdfu, who says the changes were added in macOS Golden Gate 27.2 beta 3 and beta 4. The post is labeled part 1 of a series on touch changes in macOS. Apple has not announced a touchscreen Mac, but Bloomberg has reported that a touchscreen MacBook Pro is planned for late October.

Safari tabs get drag and tap-and-hold behavior designed for touch

Dragging a tab to reorder it makes the tab lift and scale as it moves. A tap and hold opens the context menu, which is the touch counterpart to right-clicking a tab on a Mac.

The tap-and-hold menu does not include Ask Siri, according to pdfu.

Beta 3 and beta 4 continue a trail of touch changes in macOS Golden Gate

Touch support started with the launch version of macOS Golden Gate, which brought pull-to-refresh to Safari, Mail and Calendar. It also added full touch input through Sidecar, the feature that lets an iPad work as a Mac display. Because Sidecar already handles touch, none of the newer changes prove a touchscreen Mac on their own.

Beta 3, released to developers on October 5, carried gesture recognizer code in Safari, Notes, Photos and Quick Look, which we covered in our touch gestures report. It also added a long-press animation for Dock icons. Apple released beta 4 on October 13.

A touchscreen MacBook Pro is reportedly arriving later this month

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has reported that Apple plans to launch its first touchscreen MacBook Pro on or around October 27, alongside an OLED iPad mini and M6 versions of the 14-inch MacBook Pro and iMac. It would be Apple’s first touch-based Mac. Gurman has also said Apple is testing the laptop internally on macOS 27.2.

The final version of macOS Golden Gate 27.2 is expected toward the end of October.
