Another Touchscreen MacBook Pro Hint Shows up in macOS Golden Gate 27.2 Beta 3

Apple has added a long-press animation to Dock icons in macOS Golden Gate 27.2 beta 3. It is a small visual change, but it lands in the same beta that already carries touch gesture code for the rumored touchscreen MacBook Pro.

Developer ldt, who posts as @madeby_ldt, shared a short clip on X. The video shows a label reading Terminal pop up above the Terminal icon in the Dock after a long press. Apple has not said what the animation is for.

The Dock Animation Arrives Alongside Touch Gesture Code in Four Apple Apps

The Dock change is not the only touch-related find in beta 3. Apple’s code also adds gesture recognition to four apps, which we covered in our post on macOS Golden Gate 27.2 touch gestures.

  • Safari gets a touch sentinel recognizer.
  • Photos adds PXGTouchDwellGestureRecognizer.
  • Notes adds ICTouchPressGestureRecognizer.
  • Quick Look gets a dragTouch feature.

The names point to press, dwell, and drag inputs, and the Dock animation adds a long press to that group. Pull-to-refresh already arrived in Safari, Mail, and Calendar with the launch version of macOS Golden Gate.

Touch input also exists in macOS Golden Gate through Sidecar, the feature that lets an iPad work as a Mac display. For that reason, the new code does not prove a touchscreen Mac on its own, and Apple has not announced one.

The Touchscreen MacBook Pro Is Expected in October, With November as the Fallback

Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman said on the debut episode of his podcast that Apple should introduce the laptop in October, and that it could slip to November. We covered the timing in our earlier report. He also said Apple is testing the machine internally on macOS 27.2.

Internal testing started well before that, since Apple’s OLED MacBook Pro models were already running macOS 27.1 inside Apple in mid-September. Gurman’s latest newsletter adds that the new models are significantly lighter than today’s MacBook Pro, and that macOS Golden Gate includes changes to support touch input and the Dynamic Island.

Some reports call the laptop the MacBook Ultra, a name Apple has not confirmed. Samsung Display is reported to be the exclusive supplier of the OLED panels, and our MacBook Ultra guide collects the rumored chips, display details, and price.

Apple released macOS Golden Gate 27.2 beta 3 to developers on October 5, with Siri AI in new languages and redesigned brightness and volume sliders. The final version is expected toward the end of October.
