Penalty Area: Face2Face Brings Penalty Kicks to the iPhone Duo

Penalty Area: Face2Face is a penalty kick game designed around the iPhone Duo. You fold the phone into playing position, face goalkeeper ED on the upper display and swipe the ball on the lower one. The game is free to download, with a one-time $4.99 purchase that unlocks everything.

Developer Eray Dinç lists the game on the App Store for release on October 23, the day the iPhone Duo goes on sale. It arrives with the first wave of iPhone Duo launch apps, and it also plays on iPhone and iPad.

Folding the iPhone Duo Changes the Lighting and Goal Perspective

With the phone partly folded, goalkeeper ED fills the upper display while the ball and the pitch sit on the lower one. Dinç says the lighting and goal perspective respond to the hinge, and small folding movements ripple through the net.

Every shot is a swipe through the ball. The speed and curve of the swipe shape the shot, so you can hit it hard, place it in a corner or bend it past ED. A second finger can act as a planted foot for support.

The same swipe controls work on iPhone and iPad without the fold, so owners of those devices get the full game too. Other apps are built around the new hardware as well, and Toastie has you close the phone to toast a sandwich while Delta 2.0 now supports the iPhone Duo.

Four Modes Include a Two-Player Duel on One Device

The game has four modes, and the one-time Full Game purchase unlocks all of them with unlimited play. The free version starts you off in The Run.

  • The Run. Keep scoring until your first miss.
  • Fifty. See how many goals you can score from 50 shots.
  • Duel. Challenge a friend on the same device.
  • Practice. Get a feel for the ball without chasing a score.

You level up for every 10 goals scored in The Run and Fifty. Reaching level milestones unlocks Game Center achievements, and scores count toward world rankings.

The game also has a personal story behind it. Dinç says he trained as a child under goalkeeper Ilie Datcu before life took him in another direction, and that the keeper in goal is him.
