Toastie Makes the iPhone Duo the World's Most Expensive Toaster

Toastie is a $2.99 game where you build a grilled cheese, press it and serve it, and from October 23 it turns the fold of the iPhone Duo into the toaster. You build the sandwich on the open screen, close the phone to toast it, and open it before it burns.

The game is on the App Store now for iPhone and iPad. Its makers, Cyprian Brytan and Tomasz Szykulski, say iPhone Duo mode arrives on October 23, the day the phone ships, and they designed, drew and scored the game themselves. It is published from Warsaw and lands in the same week that Netflix, Zoom and Asphalt Legends update for the foldable.

Each Order Is Built, Pressed and Served by Hand

You butter the bread and drag the fillings on. Pressing has no timer, only the sizzle and the lamp, so you decide when to open it. Serving at the right second earns up to five stars, and four stars unlock the next recipe.

The menu has ten sandwiches, from Classic Grilled Cheese and Cheese & Tomato to Kimchi Grilled Cheese and The Works. Others include Brie & Cranberry, Gruyère & Red Onion, Mushroom & Taleggio, Pesto, Tomato & Gruyère and Jalapeño Three Cheese. The game ships with 10 orders, 3 loaves and 14 fillings.

The In-Game Toaster Always Costs What the Phone Cost

The joke is the price, because whatever phone you run Toastie on, the toaster costs what that phone cost. The makers list the iPhone Duo toaster at a recommended €2,299, as Model 2299-D in grade 5 titanium with one moving part.

The iPhone Duo footage the makers released is a render built from simulator footage. Their 40-second gameplay clips, in square and vertical formats, come from a real round on an iPhone, and the game plays on any iPhone or iPad today, so the fold behavior is the part to wait for on Friday.

Other apps are playing with the fold too. Sneaky Sasquatch and Retrocade on Apple Arcade are built for the folding display, and the indie app Deck-Man turns the iPhone Duo into a retro cassette player that you open to pick an album and close to start playback from Apple Music.
