With the new Pokémon GO event, throwback challenges are the perfect way for trainers to celebrate the first four years of their Pokémon GO journeys together. From May 1 till May 29, trainers will unlock throwback challenges in the form of Challenge Timed Research Lines, with each line containing eight sets of three different tasks.
These Timed Research Lines will appear in each trainer’s “Today View”, and will feature a list of limited-time tasks which can be accessed till a certain date. New tasks will be themed each week in different regions of the Pokémon GO world, inspired by adventures from previous games.
Pokémons discovered in each region will also appear more frequently to help trainers complete their tasks. These regions will be Johto, Kanto, Sinnoh and Hoenn.

Trainers who succeed in completing all four regions will unlock the Throwback Challenge Champion 2020 Special Research, which will take place from June 3 till June 8.

- Throwback Challenge 2020: Kanto Timed Research: Friday, May 1, 2020, to Friday, May 8, 2020.
- Throwback Challenge 2020: Johto Timed Research: Friday, May 8, 2020, to Friday, May 15, 2020.
- Throwback Challenge 2020: Hoenn Timed Research: Friday, May 15, 2020, to Friday, May 22, 2020.
- Throwback Challenge 2020: Sinnoh Timed Research: Friday, May 22, 2020, to Friday, May 29, 2020.
- Throwback Challenge Champion 2020 Special Research: Wednesday, June 3, 2020, to Monday, June 8, 2020.
Throwback Challenge: Kanto (May 1-8)
- Pokémon originally discovered in Kanto will appear frequently in wild and in Raids.
- Venonat, Machop, Scyther, Pinsir, Lapras, Onix, Lickitung, Tangela, and Eevee will hatch from 7km eggs.
- Complete research to get 10 rare candies an encounter with a Mewtwo that knows Psystrike.
- Pickachu will appear in the wild wearing Charizard hat.
- Shiny Venonat will be available.
- Event exclusive field research tasks with Pokémon discovered in the Kanto region.
- 2× Catch XP, 2× Raid XP, and 2× Hatch XP bonuses will be available.
Throwback Challenge: Johto (May 8-15)
- Pokémon originally discovered in Johto will appear frequently in wild and in Raids.
- Chinchou, Yanma, Gligar, Shuckle, Skarmory, Girafarig, Pineco, Dunsparce, and Phanpy will hatch from 7km eggs.
- Complete research to get 5 Rare Candies an encounter with a Ho-Oh that knows Earthquake.
- Pickachu will appear in the wild wearing Umbreon hat.
- Shiny Dunsparce will be available.
- Event exclusive field research tasks with Pokémon discovered in the Johto region.
- Double catch and Stardust will be active in Johto challenges.
Throwback Challenge: Hoenn (May 15-22)
- Pokémon originally discovered in Hoenn will appear frequently in wild and in Raids.
- Lotad, Sableye, Mawile, Trapinch Slakoth, Nincada, Skitty, Feebas and Clamperl will hatch from 7km eggs.
- Complete research to get 10 Rare Candies an encounter with a Groudon that knows Fire Punch.
- Pickachu will appear in the wild wearing Rayquaza hat.
- Shiny Skitty will be available.
- Event exclusive field research tasks with Pokémon discovered in the Hoenn region.
- Buddy candy distance and half incubator will be active in Johto challenges.
Throwback Challenge: Sinnoh (May 22-29)
- Pokémon originally discovered in Sinnoh will appear frequently in wild and in Raids.
- Chingling, Bonsly, Happiny, Cranidos, Shieldon, Glameow, Gible, Munchlax, Riolu and Mantyke will hatch from 7km eggs.
- Complete research to get 10 Rare Candies an encounter with a Cresselia that knows Grass Knot.
- Pickachu will appear in the wild wearing Lucario hat.
- Shiny Glameow will be available.
- Event exclusive field research tasks with Pokémon discovered in the Sinnoh region.
- Lucky Eggs, Incense, and Hour-long star piece will be active in Johto challenges.
Pokémon GO Throwback Challenge Champions:
- 5 Rare Candies, Professor Willow’s glasses and encounters with Galarian Stunfisk, Galarian Meowth, and Genesect.
- Galarian Darumaka, Galarian Zigzagoon, Galarian Meowth and Galarian Stunfisk will hatch from 7km eggs.
- Galarian Stunfisk will appear in research encounter, wild and in raids.
- Pokémon from Unova will be common in the wild.
Time Research challenges will appear daily for all trainers with a rolling supply of different sets of challenges. However, it is still unclear if these challenges will be the same for all users or randomized.
