WhatsApp tests AI writing help feature on iPhone

WhatsApp is testing a new artificial intelligence-powered feature that helps users refine messages before sending them. The feature, called writing help, appears in the latest WhatsApp beta for iOS via TestFlight.

According to WaBetaInfo, the option lets iPhone users highlight text and select writing help to get AI-generated suggestions for tone, clarity, and phrasing. The goal is to provide quick rewrites that make casual notes more formal, shorten long texts, or adjust style for different audiences.

This rollout aligns with Meta’s broader push to bring generative features into WhatsApp. The app has already experimented with an AI chatbot in WhatsApp and AI image editing in WhatsApp, and writing help extends that approach to everyday typing. Apple’s system-level Writing Tools are not accessible inside Meta’s apps, so an in-app assistant gives WhatsApp a native path to offer similar functionality.

Availability is still limited. As with most WhatsApp features, testing starts with a small group and then expands in phases based on stability and feedback. If adoption is strong, writing help could become a core utility for both personal and professional chats, especially for users who want polished phrasing without switching to third-party apps.

The timing also reflects a wider race to add AI to messaging. Apple is preparing broad AI features across iOS, while Google continues to build writing assistance into its services. WhatsApp’s advantage is scale and familiarity. By putting suggestions directly into the compose experience, the app reduces friction and keeps users in the same chat flow.

Privacy will be an important question as testing grows. WhatsApp typically emphasizes message security and end-to-end encryption, so details on how prompts are processed and stored will matter to users. For now, this remains a beta feature, and a wider release will depend on performance and feedback.

Meta is also testing other features at the moment such as guest chats on WhatsApp and Liquid Design but they are also currently limited to beta users.
