The new Siri app in iOS 27 beta 2 defaults to Siri AI, but switching to ChatGPT is faster than most people expect. To follow along, you need an Apple Intelligence-compatible device running iOS 27 beta 2 or later. On iPhone, that means an iPhone 16 model or later, or an iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max.

Steps to switch from Siri AI to ChatGPT
-
- In iOS 27, Siri AI has a dedicated app with a chatbot-style interface, including a text input field at the bottom, support for image and file attachments, and a conversation history menu. Launch it from your home screen or app library.
-
- Instead of tapping the field to type, press and hold it for a moment. This gesture triggers the provider switcher and works whether you are starting a new conversation or are already mid-conversation.
- A small contextual menu will pop up above the input field. Tap the “Ask…” option to proceed to the provider selection screen.

-
- A pop-up will appear listing your available chatbot providers. Currently, the only 2 options are Siri and ChatGPT. Tap ChatGPT to switch to it, and the app will route your next message to ChatGPT rather than Siri AI.

- Once ChatGPT is selected, type your query and send it as you would with Siri AI. The interface stays the same regardless of which provider is active.
- Repeat the long-press on the input field, tap “Ask…“, and select Siri from the pop-up. There is no separate toggle or settings screen involved, and the switch happens inline without leaving the conversation.
Limitations to know before switching
Conversation context does not transfer between providers. When you switch from Siri AI to ChatGPT, ChatGPT cannot see the messages you previously exchanged with Siri, and the reverse is equally true. Each provider sees only the messages sent to it, so if you are working through a multi-step task, you may need to re-establish context after switching.
Closing the Siri app and reopening it currently reverts the selection back to Siri AI, even if ChatGPT was active when you closed it. It is not yet clear whether this is a bug in the iOS 27 beta or intended behavior, so it may change before the public release this fall. Either way, plan on repeating the long-press gesture each session if you prefer ChatGPT for a given conversation.
ChatGPT will appear as an option in the pop-up regardless of whether you have enabled the ChatGPT extension under Settings > Siri > ChatGPT. That setting controls how ChatGPT integrates elsewhere in Siri, but it does not gate access to the provider switcher inside the Siri app itself. There is currently no way to set ChatGPT as the permanent default in the Siri app, though Apple may add that option in a future beta.
One compatibility note: Siri AI is not available in the EU with iOS 27 at launch, so users in those regions will not have access to this feature initially.
Apple has indicated that additional chatbot providers could be added to the Siri app over time. The iOS 27 Extensions system, found in Settings under Apple Intelligence and Siri, already allows apps like Anthropic’s Claude to integrate with Siri in other contexts, which suggests the provider pop-up could expand beyond its current 2 options in a future update.
