The Siri app in iOS 27 can send a message to ChatGPT instead of Siri AI with a press and hold on the text field. Switching back works the same way, and it happens inside the same conversation window.
Siri AI (Beta) needs an Apple Intelligence-compatible iPhone, which means an iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max or any iPhone 16 model or later, set to a supported language. It is also not available in the EU on iPhone at launch, and access still depends on joining the Siri AI waitlist.
A Press and Hold on the Text Field Opens the Provider Switcher
The Siri app has a chatbot-style interface with a text field at the bottom, support for image and file attachments, and a conversation history menu. It defaults to Siri AI, so the switch is a short gesture.
- Open the Siri app from the Home Screen or App Library.
- Press and hold the text field instead of tapping it. The gesture works for a new conversation and one already in progress.
- Tap Ask… in the small menu that appears above the field.
- Tap ChatGPT in the pop-up list of providers.
- Type your message and send it as usual. It goes to ChatGPT and not Siri AI.
To go back to Siri AI, press and hold the text field again, tap Ask… and choose Siri. The interface looks the same whichever provider is active, and nothing in Settings changes.
The ChatGPT Extension Is Set Up Under Settings and Siri
ChatGPT works as an extension of Siri, and it is set up from the Settings app. Open Settings > Siri, tap ChatGPT and tap Set Up. With Siri AI (Beta) turned on, tap Set Up Extensions, tap ChatGPT and turn on Use Extension.
You can choose whether to sign in with a ChatGPT account during setup. Your requests are saved to your ChatGPT chat history only if you are signed in.
The iPhone may ask you to confirm before it sends a request to ChatGPT. To skip that prompt, open Settings > Siri, tap ChatGPT below Extensions and turn off Confirm Requests. To turn the extension off, go to the same screen and turn off Use Extension.
Outside the Siri app, saying “Hey Siri, ask ChatGPT” followed by a request sends it to ChatGPT directly.
Siri App Settings Control What Opens First and Where History Syncs
Open Settings > Siri and tap Opens To to choose whether the Siri app starts on Recent Conversations or on a new conversation. Setting it to a new conversation puts the text field in front of you immediately, which suits the press and hold switch.
In the conversation list you can search, pin a conversation by touching and holding it, rename it, or delete it. Siri conversation history syncs across your devices when you are signed in to the same Apple Account.
