iPhone 18 Pro Features Variable Aperture Camera, A20 Chip, and Price Hike

Front Page Tech’s Jon Prosser has published a first look at iPhone 18 Pro, and the headline feature changes how the camera works at a physical level: a mechanical variable aperture main lens with moving blades, replacing the fixed ƒ/1.78 aperture that every iPhone Pro has used since the iPhone 14 Pro.

What variable aperture actually means

Every iPhone ever made has shipped with a fixed aperture lens, meaning the lens opening never changes regardless of whether you’re shooting in direct sunlight or a dim restaurant. Apple compensates for this through software processing and, on Pro models with LiDAR, computational depth sensing. The results work well, but they’re also why Portrait Mode occasionally struggles around glasses frames, hair edges, and ears, the camera is guessing, not measuring.

On iPhone 18 Pro, the main camera will use moving mechanical blades to physically open and close the aperture, the same way professional cameras and the human eye work. The practical payoff breaks into two categories. Wide open, the lens produces real optical bokeh rather than the AI-rendered version Apple currently fakes in Portrait Mode. Stopped down, it captures sharper market and macro shots with genuine deep depth of field. The biggest daily improvement will likely be video: shooting outdoors in bright sunlight currently blows out highlights because the lens cannot close to compensate. Variable aperture fixes this issue.

One detail worth knowing is that Apple is using shape memory alloy nitinol to actuate the blades rather than a conventional motor, which keeps the mechanism compact enough to fit inside a smartphone camera module. The component costs roughly 50% more than the seven-element plastic lens in the iPhone 17 Pro’s main camera, which is one reason the 18 Pro is expected to carry a higher starting price.

A20 Pro chip and packaging

The A20 Pro chip is built on TSMC’s 2-nanometer process, delivering roughly 15% faster performance and 30% better efficiency than the A19 Pro. In terms of packaging, Apple is using TSMC’s Wafer-Level Multi-Chip Module architecture, which integrates DRAM directly onto the same wafer as the CPU, GPU, and Neural Engine. The DRAM sits to the side of the processor rather than stacked on top, reducing heat transfer between the memory and chip during sustained workloads. This improvement matters most for sustained workloads and Apple Intelligence tasks.

Apple’s in-house C2 modem is also inside, adding 5G connectivity over satellite for coverage in remote areas where cell service drops out entirely.

Design, colors, and battery

The overall design stays aluminum and largely matches the 17 Pro, but the Dynamic Island is shrinking thanks to a relocated Face ID flood illuminator that moves under the display. New color options are Light Blue, Dark Cherry, Dark Gray, and Silver. Apple is also simplifying the Camera Control button by removing touch sensitivity and haptic feedback, leaving only pressure sensitivity. The MagSafe area on the back is rumored to shift to a more frosted, smooth finish.

Battery capacity figures from regulatory filings:

  • iPhone 18 Pro: 4,288 mAh (U.S.), up from 4,252 mAh on the 17 Pro, a gain of roughly 36 mAh
  • iPhone 18 Pro Max: 5,567 mAh (U.S.), up from 5,088 mAh on the 17 Pro Max, a jump of roughly 480 mAh or close to 10%

The Pro Max gets a meaningful upgrade but the standard Pro barely gains anything. The A20 Pro’s 30% efficiency improvement will matter more for Pro battery life than the capacity increase does.

Price is going up

Apple has already raised prices across iPad and Mac this year. The 50% cost premium on the variable aperture component, combined with 2nm chip costs, makes a price increase on the 18 Pro essentially inevitable. The 18 Pro ships with the biggest camera upgrade in years, but it arrives in a cycle where Apple is also asking people to pay more for the hardware itself.

iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max are expected to be announced in September alongside the foldable iPhone Ultra, which puts Apple in the unusual position of competing with itself at the high end of the market for the first time.
