watchOS 27 Will Quietly Disable Features You Never Use to Save Battery

watchOS 27 is adding a small but useful battery feature – proactive battery extension notifications that detect which features you never actually use, then offer to disable them in the background to save power. It’s a smarter approach than a blanket low-power mode, and for most people it will have a modest effect.

The system monitors your usage patterns over time and determines if you’re not using certain battery-hungry background features, it sends a notification letting you know it plans to disable them. The features in scope include gestures, Raise to Speak for invoking Siri, and Start Workout reminders. Each involves background processing that drains battery even when you’re not actively using the watch. The notification gives you the chance to accept the change or keep the features enabled. If you regularly use any of these, you’ll never see the alert.

Proactive battery extension notifications are not going to deliver multi-day battery life. Apple Watch users have wanted that for years, and no software update closes that gap. What this feature does well is remove friction: instead of auditing your own settings, the watch does it for you and asks permission before changing anything.

watchOS 27 is not a feature-heavy release as Apple’s focus this cycle is stability, performance, and smaller refinements, and the battery work fits this trend. Beyond the proactive notifications, the entire OS has been tuned for efficiency, so there are gains outside of the notification system alone.

Compatible hardware for watchOS 27 includes:

  • Apple Watch Series 9 and later
  • Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later
  • Apple Watch SE 3

A paired iPhone running iOS 27 is required to install watchOS 27 beta on your supported Apple Watch. The fourth beta was seeded recently, followed by a public beta. The final version is expected to be released to all users this fall, alongside iOS 27, iPadOS 27, macOS Golden Gate, and other software updates by Apple.
