Apple released developer beta 6 for watchOS 27 on August 17, 2026, moving to a weekly beta cadence as the software enters its final testing phase. The sixth beta arrived one week after beta 5, reflecting the late-stage rhythm where engineers focus on stability, performance, and bug fixes rather than new functionality.
Developers can download the update through the Watch app on their iPhone with a free developer account. The Apple Watch must be connected to Wi-Fi, placed on a charger, and have at least 50 percent battery to install the update. Public beta testers have access to this build as well.
watchOS 27 Compatibility and Features
watchOS 27 runs on Apple Watch Series 9 and later, Apple Watch Ultra 2 and later, and Apple Watch SE 3. This compatibility window excludes older models, continuing Apple’s pattern of dropping support for devices more than four or five years old.
The flagship addition is Siri AI, a generative AI overhaul that functions more like ChatGPT or Claude than the previous voice assistant. Siri can conduct back-and-forth conversations and access personal data across Mail, Messages, Notes, Reminders, and Calendar to complete complex tasks, with results relayed to your wrist. Processing happens on your iPhone rather than the watch itself. Siri AI launches in English later this year, with additional languages to follow.
Beyond the AI assistant, watchOS 27 refines existing features. The Liquid Glass design has been improved with more uniform refraction and enhanced contrast for better readability. A simplified Dynamic app grid appears when you press the Digital Crown, surfacing Siri Suggested apps alongside your most recently and frequently used apps. A new tap gesture lets you tap your index finger and thumb together to select widgets in the Smart Stack, offering an accessibility alternative to traditional taps.
Smart Stack suggestions now include Parked Car location tracking, birthday messages, pinned messages, celebrations, noise alerts, Theater Mode reminders, and identity and transit cards. Users can disable unused features like Raise to Speak and gesture controls to extend battery life, with notifications alerting them when features are disabled. Workout Buddy operates independently on the Apple Watch without requiring an iPhone connection.
Cycle Tracking gains perimenopause and menopause support, with the Health app providing notifications based on logged patterns. Child Safety features have been updated with a redesigned Apple Watch For Your Kids setup and a more intuitive Screen Time interface for parents to monitor app and website usage, set schedules, and approve contacts.
August’s shift to weekly betas is typical for Apple’s final pre-launch phase. With watchOS 27 stabilising ahead of September, the public launch timeline appears on track.
