American Express Membership Rewards Points Now Redeemable in Apple Pay

American Express cardholders can now redeem Membership Rewards points directly within Apple Pay’s checkout flow, eliminating the need to switch apps or complete separate redemption steps. Eligible Card Members select “Use Rewards” during payment, enter the amount they want to apply, and can cover all or part of a purchase with points accumulated through their Amex card. The change is a meaningful quality-of-life improvement for anyone who regularly uses Apple Pay and has been sitting on a growing balance of Membership Rewards points without a convenient way to spend them.

The feature works across Apple Pay transactions made online and in apps on iPhone or iPad, though it does not extend to in-store purchases. When a user redeems points through Apple Pay, Apple retains no transaction information linked to the cardholder, maintaining the privacy protections that define the platform’s approach to financial data. At checkout, users see the “Use Rewards” option within the existing Apple Pay interface, tap it, specify how many points to apply toward the transaction, and complete the purchase. The points deduct from the Amex account immediately, and the cardholder pays the remainder (if any) with their card balance or account credit, with no additional apps, logins, or redemption portals required.

For cardholders who accumulate points quickly through everyday spending categories like dining, travel, or groceries, having direct access to those points at the moment of purchase is a significant convenience upgrade. Previously, redeeming Membership Rewards points required logging into the American Express website or app, navigating to the rewards dashboard, selecting a redemption option, and then returning to whatever purchase you were trying to make. That multi-step process was enough friction to discourage casual redemption, which meant many cardholders let points accumulate without ever putting them to practical use.

This marks the first time American Express has enabled Membership Rewards redemption at the moment of purchase within Apple Pay itself. Previously, Amex cardholders could redeem points through the card issuer’s website, mobile app, or by contacting customer service, but those workflows happened outside the Apple Pay ecosystem. Direct integration at checkout removes that friction and keeps the rewards experience native to the payment interface users already trust.

Privacy remains a core part of the Apple Pay value proposition, and this integration does not change that. Apple does not store credit card numbers on device or on Apple servers, and the company does not retain information about what was purchased, how much was paid, or where the transaction took place. That same privacy architecture extends to the Membership Rewards redemption flow, so cardholders can use their points without handing Apple any additional data about their spending habits or rewards balances.
