Apple’s market share in India doubled last year, according to research

Apple’s market share in India increased from 2% to 4% in Q4 of 2020, based on data collected by research firms Counterpoint and Cybermedia. The research shows that the Cupertino tech giant succeeded in doubling its market share in the country thanks to the improved sales of older generation iPhones.

As per market research firms, the company saw an increase in sales of older iPhone models, including iPhone 11 and iPhone XR, among others. Overall, the tech giant shipped more than 3.2 million iPhone units in India in 2020, up 60% year-on-year.Apple iPhone 11

As reported by TechCrunch, the research shows the company shipped more than 3.2 million iPhone units in India in 2020, with iPhone XR, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, and iPhone SE (2020) being the most popular models in the country.

“Apple shipped more than 1.5 million iPhone units in India in the quarter that ended in December, up 100% year-on-year, making this its best quarter in the world’s largest smartphone market to date, according to research firms Counterpoint and CyberMedia.”

The shipment growth comes after Apple launched its online store in the country in September last year, which offered a better shopping experience with financing options and AppleCare+ support for Indian consumers. The company even offered perks such as a free set of AirPods with the purchase of iPhone 11. iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Pro

For more than a decade, Apple has struggled to gain market share in India due to the sky-high prices of its devices as compared to cheaper options offered by companies like Samsung, Xiaomi, Oppo, and Vivo. Part of the reason for this is Apple’s focus on higher-end devices and the other was import costs.

However, since the tech giant has also been investing in new facilities in India, it helps to reduce the prices of products there. In addition to this, it also makes the company less dependent on its production facilities in China.

The company has also adjusted its pricing of services to compete in the market. The report notes that Apple charges $1.35 for Apple Music in India, compared to $9.99 in the United States. Its Apple One bundle, which includes Apple Music, TV+, Arcade, and iCloud, costs $2.65 a month in India.
