In 2022, Apple products are most popular amongst teens in the U.S., especially AirPods

A new teen survey conducted by Piper Sandler reveals that teens’ high preference for Apple products has made it the most popular brand in the teen market in 2022. And  the use of AirPods is at an all-time record high amongst teenagers in the United States, along with strong demand for iPhone 13 and Apple Watch.

Piper Sandler’s 43rd survey of the teen market surveyed 7,100 teens across 44 states from February 16, 2022, to March 22, 2022.

87% of teens own an iPhone and 72% own AirPods, a positive trend for Apple Services’ growth

The findings of the latest Spring 2022 survey are as follows:

  • 87% of 7,100 teens own an iPhone and 18% of them owned an iPhone 13
  • 34% of surveyed teens own an Apple Watch and 14% of them intend to buy one in the next six months.
  • 72% of surveyed teens own AirPods, an all-time record high in Piper Sandler’s surveys.

In comparison to Piper Sandler’s 2021 survey, there is an increase in ownership of all three Apple products in the teens market. In 2021, 86% of teens owned an iPhone, 30% of teens owned an Apple Watch and AirPods ownership is at an all high.

“Both the 87% iPhone ownership and 87% intention to purchase an iPhone metrics remain near record highs for our survey,” says the research firm. “In addition, these trends are encouraging as the company continues to introduce new 5G iPhones, which continues to provide a significant product cycle refresh.”

Currently, the tech giant retails AirPods (second and third generation) and AirPods Pro at various price points to cater to a larger demographic.

The analyst at Piper Sandler also predicts that strong demand for Apple products is likely to boost its Service segment as well.

Piper Sandler also says that “these positive trends can also be a catalyst for further services growth.” This is already reflected in how Apple Pay “ranked first” in payment apps, “partly due to 87% of teens… saying they have an iPhone.”

Another survey conducted by investment firm UBS concluded that Apple Services are becoming a “key differentiator” in driving the company’s revenue. After interviewing over 4,000 iPhone users from 4 different geographies, it was found that Apple Music, Apple Fitness+, Apple Arcade iCloud+, and Apple Pay are Apple’s most popular Services.
