Google’s Gemini app for Mac is preparing to read, search, and send iMessages on a user’s behalf, adding one of Apple’s most personal apps to its growing list of Connected Apps. The feature is already visible in a recent update, though it does not fully work yet.
The integration appears under Settings, Connected Apps in Gemini for macOS version 1.116.5.889, listed as @messages.
What Gemini Can and Can’t Do Inside Messages
Once active, Gemini will be able to send messages to a contact or phone number, read recent conversations and unread messages, and search through message history to answer a question, with prompts like asking it to search Messages for a dinner reservation or show recent messages from a specific contact.
The integration is expected to come with real limits. Gemini cannot manage group chat membership or change a group photo, schedule a message for later or edit one already sent, attach a photo, file, or other media, send a tapback reaction, or generate images as part of an automated task. For now, it is a text-only, one-message-at-a-time tool rather than a full replacement for the Messages app itself.
9to5Google found that a server-side piece of the integration was still missing at the time of its report, so Gemini does not yet recognize @messages when typed into the prompt box, even though the option already shows up in Settings. That kind of gap usually closes with a server-side update rather than a new app release, so the feature could switch on without anyone needing to download anything further. In our testing as well, we were unable to get it work, even though it seemed to have been automatically enabled in the latest app update.
Gemini for macOS has been adding integrations at a steady pace this year. A File Providers extension recently added an Add to Gemini option when right-clicking a file in Finder, and Google added Images, Videos, and Daily Brief panels to the app’s side panel. The Messages integration follows Gemini expanding into voice control and local automation on Mac earlier this year, and it comes just a week after Google brought the Gemini app to Windows for the first time.
