A silent iPhone is meant to stay quiet, which becomes a problem when you miss an important call or cannot find the phone at all. Here is how to make your iPhone ring when it is on silent, and which settings let the right calls through.
Silent mode and Focus are separate settings with separate workarounds. Silent mode is set with the Ring/Silent switch or the Action button, while Do Not Disturb and other Focus modes silence calls and notifications. The guide on how to mute all sounds on iPhone covers the quiet side.

Alarms and Favorite Contacts Still Sound in Silent Mode
On older iPhones with a Ring/Silent switch, an orange switch means Silent mode is on and the phone vibrates for incoming calls and alerts. On the iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 16 and later, including the iPhone 16e, the Action button turns Silent mode on or off by default.
Alarms set in the Clock app still sound in Silent mode, and calls from favorite contacts still ring. Adding the people who matter most to Favorites in the Phone app means their calls ring through a silent iPhone. To make everything ring again, flip the switch until the orange no longer shows, or press the Action button.
Focus Can Let Chosen People Ring Through
Do Not Disturb silences calls, alerts and notifications, but you can allow some of them through.
- Open Settings and tap Focus, then tap Do Not Disturb.
- Add the people or apps you want notifications from.
- Choose which callers are allowed to come through.
- Turn on Repeated Calls if you want a caller who calls again within a short period to get through.
Turn On Do Not Disturb From Control Center
- Swipe down from the top-right corner of the screen to open Control Center.
- Tap Focus.
- Tap Do Not Disturb to turn it on.
- Tap the Focus status again if you want to change how long Do Not Disturb stays active.
Emergency Bypass Lets One Contact Break Through Do Not Disturb
Emergency Bypass is set for a single contact and allows calls and messages from that person to come through even when Do Not Disturb is on.
- Open the Contacts app and select the person you want to allow through.
- Tap Edit.
- Tap Ringtone.
- Turn on Emergency Bypass.
- Tap Done.
You can also repeat these steps and turn on Emergency Bypass under Text Tone if you want messages from that contact to come through as well.
Find My Plays a Sound Even When the iPhone Is Silent
If the problem is a silent iPhone you cannot find, ring it from another device. Go to icloud.com/find, sign in with your Apple Account, select the iPhone and click Play Sound. The sound plays even if the iPhone is in Silent mode or the volume is muted. For another route, there is a guide on using Google Assistant to find your iPhone.
An online iPhone starts the sound after a brief delay, raises the volume gradually and plays for about 2 minutes, with a Find My alert on the screen. An offline iPhone plays the sound the next time it connects to Wi-Fi or cellular, and a confirmation email goes to your Apple Account address.
