How to Set up Pro Video Storage on iPhone 18 Pro for ProRes

The iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max will not let you turn on Apple ProRes until you reserve part of the phone’s storage for it. The setting is called Pro Video Storage, and you set it up once in the Camera menu.

ProRes files are up to 30 times larger than HEVC files, so the amount you reserve decides how much footage fits. Blackmagic Camera 3.5 can already record ProRes straight into that reservation.

Pro Video Storage Gets Set Up Once in the Camera Formats Menu

ProRes works with every camera on the iPhone 18 Pro, including the front camera. Here is how to turn it on:

  1. Open Settings and tap Camera.
  2. Tap Formats and turn on Apple ProRes.
  3. Tap Configure Pro Video Storage and set how much storage to reserve.
  4. Tap Update Pro Video Storage, then tap the Close button.

You only do this the first time you turn ProRes on. Turning ProRes off again means repeating the same steps.

The amount can be changed whenever you like. Go back to Settings, Camera and Formats, tap Configure Pro Video Storage, set a new amount and tap Update Pro Video Storage. Removing the reservation returns that storage to the rest of the phone.

The reservation matters most on the smaller models. If you have not picked a capacity yet, read which iPhone 18 Pro storage size to buy. The phones now run from 256GB to 2TB.

Log and Log 2 Need ProRes and Pro Video Storage Turned On First

The Log format is chosen in the same menu. On the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max, ProRes has to be on and Pro Video Storage configured before the option appears.

  1. Open Settings, tap Camera, then tap Formats.
  2. Tap ProRes Log Video Encoding.
  3. Choose Log or Log 2.

Log and Log 2 are available on iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro models.

To shoot, open Camera and switch to Video mode. Tap the resolution and frame rate values in the corner of the screen and pick a ProRes option. ProRes is not available in Cinematic, Time-lapse or Slo-Mo mode.

4K at 120 fps ProRes and ProRes RAW Both Need an External Drive

The Camera app records ProRes up to 4K at 30 fps on the phone’s own storage. Higher frame rates and ProRes RAW depend on a compatible external storage device.

  • 4K at 120 fps ProRes: iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro models, with external storage.
  • 4K at 60 fps ProRes: iPhone 15 Pro and iPhone 15 Pro Max, with external storage.
  • ProRes RAW: iPhone 17 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro models, through apps such as Final Cut Camera, with external storage.

Final Cut Camera 2.4 is the current version, and version 2.0 brought ProRes RAW to the iPhone 17 Pro. One minute of full-sensor ProRes RAW at 30 fps can use more than 10GB, and one minute of ProRes RAW HQ at 30 fps can use more than 15GB.
