Apple highlights toughness of iPhone 12 Ceramic Shield protection in new video ‘Fumble’

In a new iPhone 12 promotional video ‘Fumble’ Apple highlights the crack resistance of the Ceramic shield screen protection. Described as the toughest smartphone front glass, Apple puts in the glass to test in a very relatable scenario.

Earlier, the company showcased the durability of the iPhone 12 and the toughness of Ceramic Shield in the ‘Cook’ video. The home chef put iPhone 12’s spill and splash resistance and Ceramic Shield durability to test.

The new ‘Fumble’ video showcases the crack-and-scratch resistance of the iPhone 12 Ceramic Shield

Posted on its official YouTube channel, the short 40 seconds video clip, shows a woman casually walking and talking on her iPhone 12 in Product Red. Unfortunately, she fumbles and as much as she tries to save her smartphone from falling, her smartphone falls face down on the ground. And Luckily, the screen stays intact without any cracks.

“iPhone 12 with Ceramic Shield. Tougher than any smartphone glass. Relax, it’s iPhone.”

Manufactured by Corning, Ceramic Shield glass is made by using nanoscale ceramic crystals which are harder than most metals used in glass, put through a dual ion-exchange process for scratch-resistance, and is said to offer 4x better drop performance.

iPhone already had the toughest glass in a smartphone. So to dramatically increase the durability of iPhone 12, we had to introduce an all-new material.

By controlling the type of crystals and degree of crystallinity, we developed an exclusive formula that maximizes the toughness of the ceramic while remaining optically clear. This was the breakthrough that made Ceramic Shield ideally suited for the display. It’s a first in any smartphone, and it’s tougher than any smartphone glass. – Apple

JerryRigEverything tested Ceramic Shield drop protection of the latest flagship smartphone. He concluded:

“Ceramic Shield is not the product that will bring us to the next level of Mohs hardness. A piece of glass has six sides: front, back, and all four edges”. He also added, “and with five of those six sides protected by this phone frame in a way that most smartphones are not built, it really does make this iPhone 12 Pro more shatter-resistant.”
