Why an iPhone 17 Pro Can Survive a Fall from an Airplane

A story is making the rounds about an iPhone 17 Pro found intact after falling from an airplane, and while the headline reads like a marketing stunt, the physics behind it are well-documented and genuinely interesting. The real question is not whether the phone survived, it is why iPhones keep doing this.

As reported by CBC, while taking aerial photographs for her artwork from a small plane flown by her husband over Saskatchewan in Canada, artist Heather Cline lost her brand-new iPhone when high-speed winds pulled it right out of its lanyard case, sending it plummeting 1.1 km (over 3,600 feet) to the ground. Using the Find My app on her Apple Watch, the couple tracked the device nearly 100 km east of Regina into a rural canola field, where they were shocked to find the phone resting face-up against a few stalks, completely pristine, undamaged, and fully functional after its massive drop.

The incident echoes a well-documented 2024 case where an iPhone survived a 16,000-foot fall from Alaska Airlines Flight 1282, after sudden cabin depressurization sucked items out of the aircraft. That phone was found by Vancouver, Washington resident Sean Bates on the side of Barnes Road in Portland, Oregon, still open to an Alaska Airlines email, display uncracked, and fully functional. The NTSB got involved and told Bates his was the second phone recovered from the flight in that area.

The survival was not pure luck as the low weight and relatively high drag of a smartphone mean it reaches terminal velocity quickly and does not build force the way a denser object would. Beyond a certain point, the height of the fall becomes almost irrelevant. What is critical here is the angle of impact and the landing surface, forested terrain with soft ground cover absorbs energy in a way that concrete does not.

The iPhone 17 Pro’s heat-forged aluminum unibody enclosure is a meaningful departure from its predecessors, and drop testing confirms the frame holds up well: back-down drops at six feet left only minor scuffs. Ceramic Shield 2 on the front brings 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation, and the iPhone 17 Pro is measurably more durable than the iPhone 16 Pro line across most test scenarios.

Face-down drop tests tell a more complicated story, though. Displays can shatter from six-foot falls, leaving Ceramic Shield 2 too sharp to handle with bare hands even as the phone stays functional. The material still fails like glass, regardless of the improved scratch resistance numbers.

JerryRigEverything flagged a separate concern: the raised edges around the camera plateau on the back of the iPhone 17 Pro have no chamfer, fillet, or radius to protect them, making that area particularly prone to scratches. It is a notable omission on a device whose aluminum redesign is partly defined by thermal and structural improvements. The vapor chamber cooling system genuinely does allow the iPhone 17 Pro to run significantly cooler than its predecessor under sustained load, but the camera edges reflect a different set of durability tradeoffs.

The Alaska Airlines phone that survived 16,000 feet was in a case, a detail that tends to get lost in the retelling. Apple’s IP68 rating (19 feet underwater for up to 30 minutes) and Ceramic Shield 2’s improved scratch resistance are real advances, but the angle of a drop, the surface it hits, and whether a case is present will determine the outcome far more than any spec sheet figure. The airplane story illustrates the physics well; it is not an argument for leaving the house without a case or skipping an AppleCare+ plan.
