Apple has confirmed which countries will get an eSIM-only iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max this year, and if you’re in the US, that includes you. There’s no physical SIM tray on the frame, same as the iPhone 17 Pro before it.
Where the iPhone 18 Pro Is eSIM-Only
According to Apple’s own specifications, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max support eSIM only, with no physical SIM tray, in the following countries and regions:
- United States
- Canada
- Mexico
- Guam
- U.S. Virgin Islands
- Japan
- Bahrain
- Kuwait
- Oman
- Qatar
- Saudi Arabia
- United Arab Emirates
This is the exact same list as last year’s iPhone 17 Pro, so if you already own one, nothing changes with your upgrade.
Everywhere Else, the SIM Tray Stays
Outside this list, the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max still ship with a nano-SIM tray alongside eSIM support. That includes the UK, the rest of Europe, Australia, New Zealand, Singapore, and South Korea. In China, buyers get a choice between two nano-SIM cards, one nano-SIM plus one eSIM, or two eSIMs.
The new foldable iPhone Duo skips the tray entirely and ships eSIM-only worldwide, regardless of country.
Why Apple Is Doing This
Apple started removing the SIM tray with the iPhone 14 series back in 2022, US-only at first, and has been widening the list every year since. Dropping the tray frees up internal space for a larger battery. Apple has also pointed to security as a reason: an eSIM can’t be pulled out of a lost or stolen iPhone the way a physical SIM can. On top of that, an iPhone can hold at least eight eSIMs at once, which is useful if you travel and don’t want to hunt down a local SIM card at the airport.
If you’re buying an iPhone 18 Pro in the US, this isn’t a new limitation, it’s the same setup you’ve had since the iPhone 14. Your carrier can transfer your existing number to an eSIM in a few minutes, and the process is honestly smoother than swapping a physical card ever was.
