Apple has officially moved the iPhone X and 15-inch 2018 MacBook Pro to its obsolete products list, marking the end of Apple’s standard hardware service for both devices.
The change means Apple and its authorized service providers can no longer order parts for the two models. It also puts both products beyond Apple’s normal window for hardware repairs and replacements.
What Apple’s Obsolete Status Means
Apple classifies products as obsolete when it has stopped distributing them for sale for more than seven years, although the company ultimately determines when a device moves between its product categories.
The vintage category covers products Apple stopped selling more than five but less than seven years ago. Apple may still provide hardware service for vintage products, but only while replacement parts are available.
Once a product becomes obsolete, however, Apple discontinues all hardware service for it. Authorized service providers also cannot order parts through Apple’s repair channels.
The iPhone X was released in 2017 and introduced several major changes to Apple’s smartphone lineup, including Face ID, an OLED display, and the removal of the Home button. Apple eventually ended major software support for the model with iOS 17, leaving iOS 16 as its final major iOS release. The device currently supports up to iOS 16.7.16.
The 15-inch 2018 MacBook Pro has also reached the end of its official hardware support window. The model is limited to macOS Sequoia, with macOS 15.7.7 currently the latest version available for the machine.
The new classifications do not immediately prevent either device from working. Owners can continue using their iPhone X or 2018 MacBook Pro as normal, but official repair options are now significantly more limited. Independent repair shops may still be able to service the devices using compatible parts.
Apple’s obsolete list also includes older iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple Watch, and other products. In some circumstances, Apple can extend service availability for certain products for up to 10 years, depending on parts availability and local requirements.
