The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

i just did the jailbreak for my ipod touch 2gen 3.1.2. but is not letting me install cydia is telling meerror downloading cydia could not download. error:error domain=nsurlerrordomain code=1001 userinfo=0x19d520 “time out” can some one help me.
If you jailbreak using this method with an ipod touch 3g, and you decide you don't want to have a jailbroken ipod, (thus you don't want to have to plug in your ipod to your computer every time you turn it on) is it possible to “Un-jailbreak” it, so you no longer need to plug it in and run blackrain?
Sometimes apps need reboots, etc, and not being able to turn on your ipod because you are not near a computer is really crap tbh…

Just restore your firmware to unjailbreak it.
That's because an internet connection isn't available or you should try re jailbreaking your ipod to fix it.

You'll have to restore the firmware for that using iTunes which will remove the jailbreak.

I use vista, but I can’t find the compatibility thing for XP, is there a way to get it o.o
Basically, Click on the Blackra1n app and right click on your mouse. You’ll see a ‘compatibility’ tab. Click on it and check the box which says ‘Run this program in compatibility mode for:’ and you should have WIndows XP (Service Pack 2)

I have an iPod 3rd Generation 35 GB with 3.1.2 Firmware . So if I do download Blackra1n , I would get a tethered jailbreak right? Would there be a un-tethered jailbreak soon? And after I tether-jailbreak my Ipod Touch , Is it alright to just leave it in sleep mode 24 Hours a day? Thanks :D

How do I install cydia? It seems like it works, but then when I look for it, it is not there.

So let me get this straight, at this point in time there is no way to keep the iPod Touch 3gen jail broken correct? So every time I restart the device I have to restore using blackra1n (or if I want to start over then I use Itunes) right? Isn't there any permanent way of doing this?
