The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

well i have the tethered version but i deleted the jailbreak off my ipod cuz it makes me reboot everytime i turn my ipod on which makes me mad. is there anyway i can get his image off my ipod when i turn it on all the time??
Okay, First time I tried it, It got past that gay face, then it rebooted, After it rebooted, The deivce showed up with a White Usb lead and an iTunes icon, and their was a flash loading circle at the very bottom for about 1 hour, It was frozen, Untill I held down all the buttons on the iTouch and restored the Original firmware which deleted my firmware. Am going to give this a second go, As it seemed to work for all of them up their ^^.
Okay, to those of you who get stuck at the DFU mode, Read these steps on how to restore iPhone/iTouch and to Finaly Jailbreak it.
1.) At the DFU-Mode screen, Hold down ALL buttons untill the device turns OFF. Turn the device back in, with the Usb cable plugged in.
2.) Let iTunes open and restore your iPhone/iTouch to the most recent version (In this case, 3.1.2, This takes about 15 – 20 minutes tops) Close iTunes.
3.) After the iPhone/iTouch is restored, Close iTunes and let the Device restart. After the Device has restarted, CONNECT TO A WI-FI CONNECTION, ANY WILL DO.
4.) After you have connected to a Wi-Fi connection, Open up Task Manager on windows. (ALT-CTRL-DEL < Task Manager < iTunesHelper.exe End Process)
We do this because in some cases, after the Device has rebooted, iTunes tend to open and start restoring it instantly (Hence the device being stuck in DFU-Mode)
5.) Plug in your Device and Download blackra1n (save it to computer). Open blackra1n and click “m4ke it ra1n”. Windows will detect that your Device is in DFU-Mode (Recovery Mode) and install it. At the same time as windows is installing the Devices recovery mode drivers, you should see a picture of a Man/Boy on your Device for about 1 minute.
6.) After this 1 minute, Your device shall be jailbroken, and the “blackra1n” app should be on your device. Click on it, And choose “cydia” which will then be Downloaded and extracted on your Device. After extraction is done, The Cydia software will reorganise your Device, Giving yu access to Root Folders and applications blocked by Apple.

i downloaded everything and followed all the steps, but when i click on rock, it opens a blank screen, then closes after 2 or 3 seconds, what does this mean??
I have been trying Blackra1n for two days on my new iPod Touch 16gb, OS 3.1.2 to no avail. I first had OS 2.1.2, and Blackra1n still didn’t work then either, but I tried Redsn0w and jailbroke on the first try. The only reason that I undated at all, is because I wanted to use apps that needed the update to 3.0 OS. I have tried everything written on the web. I do not understand what the problem is. This is what happens:
Everything goes according to directions until it says “Your iPod is now Jailbroken..blah,blah,blah… donate”, but then my iPod screen is dark, and the weird guy with the circle of iPods never pops up (not even once). I then, usually, press and hold the sleep button until it reboots, and then it’s virtually UNTOUCHED by Blackra1n.
ANY advice would be SOOOOO greatly appreciated…What the hell can I do?

ok i have a question… ok now say this all works…seeing as its tethered…it is no longer jail broken when u turn it off and back on right? so what about the apps u downloaded during that time…does it work? and can u reboot it without having to plug it in again?

i jailbroke my itouch, i had thought that jailbreaking it would give me internet everywhere.. does it not? because i still can only get internet from my wifi from my house, and pretty much the whole reason i jailbroke it was for the internet everywhere. if it is suppose to give me internet everywhere will someone please tell me how to fix it?

interenet can only be gotten if u have a sim card which only the iphone has or wifi thats what ipod touch has and wifi ony can connect to wifi spots
Obviously it doesn’t do the internet thing, especially not for the iTouch. If you had an iPhone then you could use that to get internet pretty much anywhere for your laptop, seeing as the iPhone already gets internet from it’s 3G connection.

please help. i jailbroke my ipod with blackra1n, did everything right, even downloaded tons of apps using cydia. alright, i turned off my ipod, and every time i try turing it back on, it shows the USB and iTunes thing, and I bascially HAVE to restore EVERYTIME, to even get my ipod on. And then it DELETES everything. including blackra1n. i’ve done this two times now. and i just have to keep jailbreaking it, restoring it, and again. 1rst of all. NEVER, NEVER, Turn OFF by holding power button. This may cause ”connect to iTunes ”
2nd. Just ” Jailbreak ” another time, open blackra1n, ( with iTunes process closed.) Jailbreak, and all will be good. !

Yea, when it does that screen with the USB cable and the iTunes logo…thing, plug it into your computer and ignore whatever iTunes says and just run Blackra1n again. It’ll take a minute to reboot with the dudes face on the screen and then wham-boodaloo-bam, you’re good again.
Least ways that’s what I do.

I have exactly the same problem… I had quite a few applications before i attempted to jailbreak and lost them all… the recovery wouldn’t let me recover my files. I’m not too bothered about them but it would be nice to be able to have them back, I have a new (reasonably) iPod touch 3G 3.1.2, I’ve been reading around where people have managed to get it jailbroke with the same as me. I manage to get cydia and a bunch of cool apps but if i turn the ipod off then it just wont boot up. If you know of any way to jailbreak it then please e-mail me at arsenal4lyfe1@hotmail.co.uk it would be greatly appreciated.
whenever your ipod turns off you are going to need to connect it to your computer and run blackra1n. Your iPod touch is tethered so you have to do this everytime but luckily blackra1n only takes like 2 minutes to reboot
