The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

this happened to me also i think because i had itunes open during the install
close itunes, and hard reset your touch. (hold the power + home button until it shuts down)
re run blackra1n and you should all set

I have the iPod Touch 3G 3.1.2 and when i did it first time it went to the recovery screen and it said the i have an iPod that needs to be restored… now when you do this it also downloads the update, my internet is 56k (really f**king slow) 8_( it takes about 4 hours to download it!!!!!!!!!! And my computer always freezes when I’m downloading something because my sister always goes on X(] so i’m not gonna download it. But the second time I went to jailbreak it, it worked!! :D But i didn’t have wifi so i thought ‘meh’ and deleted it just for the time until i got near wifi, but then i tried to put it back on there and… it… didn’t… work… NOOOOOO!!!! PLEASE HELP ME!!
Hey, PEOPLE STOP TURNING OFF YOUR TOUCH, THERES NO NEED, JUST KEEP IT CHARGED, If you accidentally turn it off or let it run out of battery just plug it into your computer, Close itunes and run blackrain. i am exactly in your shoes, i dont know what to do. i wanted to install the icall log delete (because the iodiots who made iphone never thought one would want to edit his/her call log!! Blah!). i used the blackra1n and it did reboot the device, i installed cydia and got the program. once program is setup, it restarts and asks to be connected to itunes, then it restores/deletes all! what the hell is wrong? did you solve your problem?
help! anyone?

When it asks to be connected to iTunes, don’t open up iTunes. Run the blackra1n tool again, and click make it rain. It’ll fix your issue and wont restore/delete anything.

When you have jailbroken your ipod touch and you do happen to turn it off or the battery runs out connect it to your pc without turning it on (the ipod that is) and close itunes if it opens then just hit make it rain and ipod will re-boot, works all the time and nothing is lost all apps from itunes still there and any others you have downloaded, in fact back to the same stae as when it went off.

hi. i tried running blackra1n and closed itunes, but im still stuck with the usb and itunes disc icon mode. it won’t do anything. im using vista and followed the checkmark on the compatibility tab.. help please
I just ran blackra1n on my iPod touch 3g 3.1.2 and accidently turned it off. I rebooted it and didn’t have to re-jailbreak! It’s untethered!!!!

There is no such thing as an 8GB 3rd Gen.
The current 8GB model being sold by apple is an 8GB 2nd Gen. The 32 and 64GB models are 3rd Gen.
There is an 8GB 3rd generation model available which wasn’t announced at the Music Event by Apple back then.
how do you upload apps and games downloaded onto your computer to a jail broken ipod touch? help much appreciated..
i put my ipod 2nd gen in my computer and i press make it rain, then this message comes up and says if this is the easiest jailbreak ever, yadda, yadda. So then i think the jailbreak is done but my ipod doesnt reboot and i dont see tht face of the boy so i turn off my ipod and turn it back on but there is no blackrain symbol
I have a 8GB 2nd gen ipod touch running 3.1.2 I have tried several programs and thought this would be the one to do the trick. I am running windows vista and I click the compatibility mode. Run blackra1n in admin mode. click make it rain and the device restarts then I get this stupid usb i tunes disc. I have restored my ipod 4 times. I even tried to close blackra1n while it does this and re do it then all it says is waiting for device. I have attempted everything step in this forum someone please help..

Yea you can download free apps from iTunes and then sync it to your iPod Touch.
i tried installing it onto my ipod touch but when i go to start the application it goes back out and won’t load up. what am i doing wrong?

Icy isn’t included in latest blackra1n versions, because Rock and Cydia are better and regularly updated.
Okay so I did the blackra1n thing and it said my ipod was jailbroken. and I turned it off for whatever reason and then when I turned it on again it did the itunes usb thingy. so I got scared, lol and connected it to itunes and ended up uninstalling blackra1n, then I read more about it and realized everyone was having the same problem, so I tried to do the blackra1n again and it said it was jailbroken successfully but now I dont have the icon on my screen… How do I get it back. I am using the 32 gig 3g i pod touch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
