The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

ok so i have an ipod touch 3g and its 8 gigabytes. Can i jailbreak it? will it break it? since its tethered, do i have to always reboot my itouch? or just rerun blackra1n? can i also un-jailbreak my itouch if i wanted to? and also, if i dont have itunes can i still use it[jailbreak]?

You can jailbreak it.
You’ll have to rerun blackra1n whenever you reboot it and it shows the ‘connect to iTunes’ screen because it’s tethered.
You can un-jailbreak it by restoring the firmware.
You need iTunes to use your iPod Touch anyways for music/video/apps/bookmarks/contacts etc transfer and backup, so not a bad idea to have it before and after jailbreaking.

I have a jailbroken iTouch2g 3.1.2 MC, but when I try to install some apps via Cydia, its goes into recovery and I have to do it all over again. anyone help me?
OK here we go… yes u can jail break it…. no u wont have to reboot it… if u want to uninstall just restore it using itunes.. its very simple and if u sync it with itunes it will be fine, if u were wondering… u can sync it with ur comp just like before… to be honest tho the only and I mean ONLY reason my iphone 3g is jailbroken is because I wanted to change the backround lol.. if u ask me its the only thing its good for but theres plenty of things u can do so enjoy

-Is it OK turn ON genius with blackra1n?I have ipod touch 32 GB and I have option for genius mixes for the music.So, “genius” ask me (and tell me) I must connect my all library with itunes with all my music library etc..
-and another question about games..Every time when I want sync my ipod with ny games (not games from aplle store :)), I get error..Can’t sync any, I mean any game to my ipod.

Hey was wondering if anyone can help me. I just jailbrokee my ipod touch (3.1.2) using blackra1n(rc3) and installed cydia, but when i install certain apps it asks to reboot my ipod so i reboot it but when i try and start up my ipod it is in recovery mode. Is there a way i can get it out of recovery mode or is this a problem? Every time i restart my ipod i have to recover it!
I’ve the exact same problem. Tried installing SBSetting -> it asked for reboot and was in restaure mode.
Then I tried a 2nd time, installed Winterboard, and again restore mode :(
i too have the same problem, but i discovered that when this happens, if you run black rain again, it will load up again. so just keep your phone charged and on if you dont want to keep doing this :P
i did this with my cousins 1st gen itouch 32 gb and then we tried to restore it so that we could turn it on but the mac could not recognize it anymore. so we tried it on our pc and it said it could not tell what was in the usb. Could you help?

I just bought a 8gb ipod touch the other day. Ive been trying to download blackrain a couple of times, but then the itouch would freeze up and i would have to shut it down or connect through usb to my computer so it would reboot. Does anyone know what is going on
i think so me and my friend had the same prolem with mine i believe its your computer you must use anothe one thats how we fixed it from freezingg

Okay the first time around Blackra1n actually worked. But, cydia refused to download, so I uninstalled Blackra1n. Now, i tried putting blackra1n back on my iTouch, but everytime I do, It doesnt appear on my home screen! I do everything Im supposed to, and everything goes as it’s supposed to, but when it finishes raining, the app doesn’t appear. I’ve reinstalled everything, from the blackra1n app, to iTunes, and I’ve even restored my iTouch numerous times. Please help me!

You need to restore your ipod, make sure you have all your music/photos/apps etc. saved on iTunes or your computer, then reinstall blackra1n.
Okay so I did the blackra1n thing and it said my ipod was jailbroken. and I turned it off for whatever reason and then when I turned it on again it did the itunes usb thingy. so I got scared, lol and connected it to itunes and ended up uninstalling blackra1n, then I read more about it and realized everyone was having the same problem, so I tried to do the blackra1n again and it said it was jailbroken successfully but now I dont have the icon on my screen… How do I get it back. I am using the 32 gig 3g i pod touch.
Any help would be greatly appreciated..
u guys HAVE to make a blackra1n RC4 that will let u turn it on and off without messing everything up!(i sucesfully jailbroke mine but i hate that i cant turn it off)

I had the same problem so now im just un installing it. hold your home and power button until it shows the itunes usb picture. It may not work on the first try.
Why is it when I right click the BR icon to turn on xp compatibility mode that there is no xp compat in the drop down menu?
i have a 64gb 3gs Version 3.1.2 (7D11) i tried blackrain and i was able to put cracked apps from itunes to my ipod itouch. but when i turn off my device it always wants to have a restore and plugged into itunes. but if its just running normal, it doesn’t seem to have a problem but i can’t install other apps. how can i prevent this? is there any other solution? its really irritating that i can’t turn off the itouch, what if i ran out of battery out of nowhere? i have to redo the whole thing again? im trying to figure out if its the cydia is causing the restore, because i tried removing blackrain on the itouch. please help. thanks!

If your too stupid or incompetant to know how to use blackra1n, dont jailbreak. I miss when there were no apps for noobs to breka their iphones ect with.
Everyone who uses jailbreak of some kind has to start somewhere. And I don’t think that asking questions makes us stupid or incompetent. And if all you can do is call people stupid, maybe you should get a life. Go find something else to do other than be a smartas*!
