The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

I got a mac. Itunes pops up and says, ” Itunes has detected your ipod in recovery mode. You must recovery your ipod before using it with itunes.” I can recover it and everything is back to normal I just want you jailbreak my ipod touch 3rd generation unteathered. HELP! PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!! =p

You idiot. Basically what that means is that Apple has detected that you’re installing a jailbreak and is asking “please may I patch your iPod so that jailbreaking it will become impossible?”.
Use a little more common sense in future.
the blackra1n is still tethered on my 2g ipod touch. works great until you turn it off, then all you get on reboot is the itunes icon, you have to re blackra1n it again. came with 3.1.2 firmware. any way round this yet?

i tried to jailbreak it again but it says:
“This application has failed to start because QTCF.dll was not found. Re-installing the application may fix this problem.”

im not sure whether to jailbreak or not because is there any chance it can completely break and if it goes wrong can you fully restore it back to normal
i don’t know if anyone else has had this problem, but i jailbroke my itouch 3g running 3.1.2 and downloaded cydia and everything, and it all worked. i thought it slowed down my itouch so i restored it. then i found out i could get pokemon so i re-jailbroke it. i have blackra1n on the itouch, and i can download cydia. when i download anything from cydia, however, i have to reboot, and when i reboot, it comes up with the recovery screen. help??

alsoanyone were u click make it rain and it gets stuck in recovery mode i fixed mine by NOT running in compatability mode i run vista
I don’t see where everyone’s problems came from. My old iPod (jailbroken) died on me I restored and this worked fine. By far the easiest.

Anyone know how to get around having to run blackrain to boot up an ipod? I have to do so everytime i reboot or turn off my ipod to get it to boot (goes to recovery mode)
crap…. it didnt work on my ipod it almost got bricked but it still works i just synced it to itunes again im waiting for it to finish restoring and syncing :( i think my game saves and accounts on the games are deleted D:

If there were a problem you can always reboot to factory settings. Then your warranty is fine. If you tell someone you jailbroke it then of course your warranty will be voided.
if something happens to it and you can still plug it in and it comes up in itunes restore and you’ll be set
OMG This was so simple. I spent WEEKS trying to jailbreak my ipod touch before realizing I had a 3G. Everyone else said it can’t be done. They lied and this was so damn easy. I am going to donate some money RIGHT NOW thank you George you are so awesome.
1. My ipodtouch 2g 32 gb memory is almost full. Do i need this memory in my lap to jailbreak?
2. Does it need to be running itunes to jailbreak? does it have to be closed?

I cannot firgure this out… ok, so, i make it rain, and i get blackra1n on my ipod touch (3.1.2 32gb) and i can install cydia and rock, but then whenever i try to get anything from the apps it trys downloading then it goes into recovery mode, ive left it like that for probably a half an hour but it wont fix itself, and this is now the 3rd time ive tryed to run blackra1n. I need help =(
