The jailbreak for iPod Touch OS 3.1.2 is finally here, and from none other than George Hotz who has been jailbreaking the iPhone since it was first launched. Called blackra1n, this Windows only jailbreak tool works for all iPhones ( 2G, 3G, and 3GS ) as well as iPod Touch 2G and 3G.
Warning 3G and 3GS unlockers, do not upgrade to 3.1.2 using iTunes if you want to keep your unlock. Baseband cannot be downgraded. Check out the dev team’s offerings. Also blackra1n doesn’t hacktivate.
Jailbreak your iPod Touch using blackra1n
- Upgrade to OS 3.1.2 via iTunes. It’s free if you were already using 3.0 on iPod Touch otherwise you’ll have to buy it.
- Once your iPod Touch has upgraded to 3.1.2, download blackra1n. Use Windows XP compatibility mode if you’re using Windows Vista or Windows 7.
- Launch the tool, and click the ‘make it ra1n’ button.
- It’ll take some time while your iPod Touch is jailbroken. You’ll see George’s picture, which means it’s working. After it’s down, it’ll restart.
- You should see the blackra1n icon in your apps now. Launch it.
- From here, you can install Cydia, which lets you install jailbreak applications. You can also try Rock or Icy.
- Congratulations, you have your iPod Touch 3.1.2 jailbreak up and running.
blackra1n isn’t available for OS X yet but expect it soon. If you have any questions, leave them in the comments below.
UPDATE: If your device doesn’t boot again, don’t panic. Just re-run blackra1n while the device is plugged in.

i have a 3g with 3.1.1 if i jailbreak will it be a ‘teather’ (not sure if i spelled that right) jailbreak???
do i have to have WIFI for blackra1n to work???
and does itunes have to be off(not running) when i download it?

Hey Imran, is there gonna be an update BlackRa1n or something like it soon. Something that can bypass the “tethered” feature we’re almost all suffering from.
I expect an update to be available but not sure by when we’ll get our hands on it. It’s sad that Apple has made it harder for 3rd gen iPod Touch jailbreakers, but currently the best way is to avoid restarts.

i believe some people here just want to have everything for free and it must be good otherwise complaints are mostly very cruel and unfair to the developer of this great tool -> blackra1n. (thank you geohot) i used it on a few iphones and had no problem so far. for my friends ipod 3g MC its not possible AT THE MOMENT, to reboot it without make it ra1n.
to all who complained, restore it to original firmware and use it as a normal ipod and shut up. if you didnt inform yourself what is possible at the moment, then its your own fault. i convinced my friend to keep it jbroken, because the possibilities are really cool when its free.
PLEASE A BIT MORE RESPECT FOR THE DEVELOPERS. THEY MAKE A GREAT WORK FOR THE PUBLIC.

Okay maybe its just because I’m a noob. But I have an iPod touch 3g and using 3.1.2 firmware. When I run blackra1n on my windows xp it didn’t worked the first time so I ran it again like it well I say the picture on my ipod like it said but then iTunes popped and up and said something about my ipod being in recovery mode and it would have to be restored to factory settings. So my question is: IS THIS NORMAL? Do I just need to leave my ipod alone and let it “reboot.” I’m new to this whole thing so work with me. Any advice? Whenever i download blackra1n it works… but then the wait to reboot thing comes up and nothing happens.

I have tried this procedure on 2 Ipod touch Gen 2’s, and both experience the same probelm.
After the jailbreak, everything is working great – Cydia working, etc.
A few days later, the ipods were turned on an the ‘Connect to ituens’ logos appeared. Had to do a full restore to factory settings. IF anyone knows why this would happen, please comment. Otherwise, perhaps I’ll try the Sn0wbreeze method.
